NEW LONDON, Conn. - In the Coaches vs Cancer Tournament Championship game that came down to the wire, the FDU-Florham men's basketball team was edged out by the Mount Ida College Mustangs 67-66 on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils (1-2) were led by their two starting guards, Steve Herdman and Jayson Hughes who combined for 30 points on the afternoon. Herdman had a team-high 16 points while Hughes added 14 on 4-for-8 shooting from the field.
Both teams struggled to gain separation as they traded baskets all game. The first half was highlighted by Herdman's 10 points in 12 minutes of action. With less than three minutes left in the opening stanza, the sophomore guard netted two consecutive 3-point shots to give the Devils a four-point edge over the Mustangs (3-1).
Mount Ida came right back and retook the lead with one minute remaining after several made free throws and an Ethan Dujon layup. The Mustangs attacked the painted area all game and outscored the Devils 30-14 down low.
Following a midrange score by Herdman in the early stages of the second half to knot the game up at 33-33, the Mustangs went on a 13-5 run that was capped off by a Jesse Nelson layup.
With 12 minutes left in the contest, the Mustangs jumped out to an eight-point lead, the largest deficit of the game. However, the Devils worked their way back and eventually went on to take a 56-53 advantage after Herdman knocked down four consecutive foul shots.
FDU-Florham held onto their slim lead up until the two-minute mark when Kevin Connor scored in the paint on an and-one layup to give the Mustangs a three-point lead.
However, as the game was winding down, freshman Derek Leohner buried a 3-point shot off of the assist from Hughes and the two teams were knotted up at 63-63 with under a minute left to play.
Mount Ida responded with a 3-point make of its own from Joey DeFillippi and after two missed shots by FDU-Florham, the Devils were forced to foul. The Mustangs made just one of the two shots at the charity stripe and Hughes came down the court with the ball and sank a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one, but it was too late for the Devils to mount the comeback as time expired.
The Devils will be back in action on Tuesday, November 24 when they travel to Hoboken, N.J. for a non-conference road tilt with Stevens Institute of Technology at 6 p.m.
