HACKENSACK, N.J. – In the third-ever battle between the Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham Campus and the Metropolitan Campus, the FDU-Metro Knights earned a comfortable 111-70 victory on Monday night at Stratis Arena.
The Devils (0-1) fought valiantly against the NCAA Division I Knights (1-1) but were unable to slow their attack.
Freshman forward
Mike Holloway gave the Devils fits by using his size and length to relentlessly attack the glass for rebounds and layups. Holloway was perfect from the floor, knocking down all 10 of his shots en route to a game-high 21 points. The freshman forward also nabbed four offensive rebounds.
Making his collegiate debut, first-year guard
Derek Leohner led the Devils with 17 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Fellow freshman guard
Jayson Hughes also had success in his first game with the Devils scoring 13 points on 50 percent shooting to go along with four assists.
The Devils came out of the gates strong as Hughes dropped off a nice setup to Leohner for the game's first points. Hughes' 3-pointer 1:24 into the game gave the Devils an early 8-2 lead but the Knights took control from there.
Eight FDU-Florham first half turnovers were converted into 11 points by the Knights who did an excellent job of getting quality looks at the rim throughout the opening stanza. The efficient Knights' offense resulted in a 71.8 percent shooting clip over the first 20 minutes of action.
Both teams struggled to keep the opposition off of the free throw line and combined to commit 27 personal fouls with 15 by the Knights and 11 for the Devils in the first stanza. The Devils were unable to make the most of their time at the charity stripe and converted just 11-of-19 in the opening half.
Holloway came off of the bench and knocked down all seven of his shots in the half en route to 15 points, while Townes added 11 first half points to lead the Knights to a commanding 68-34 edge at the break.
Herdman led a burst out of the locker room for the Devils by knocking a trey and drawing a charge in the first five minutes. He also extended a possession by chasing down an offensive rebound and setting up Leohner for a corner three. The second-year guard corralled seven rebounds and dished out four helpers in the loss.
The foul trouble continued for the Knights in the second half as the Devils entered the bonus with 12 minutes to play in regulation. But their struggles at the line continued and they made just 3-of-8, finishing 14-of-27 in total.
The Knights stretched their lead to as large as 48 before the final whistle sounded. With the win, the Knights now lead the all-time series 3-0 including victories in each of the last two seasons.
Up next for the Devils is the Coaches vs Cancer Tournament at Central Connecticut College this Friday, November 20. The Devils begin the two-game tilt at 6 p.m. against the host Camels.
