MADISON, N.J. – After a scoreless first half, Alvernia University netted two goals in 1:27 to top the FDU-Florham field hockey team 2-1 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Tournament Semifinals on Saturday at Robert T. Shields Field.
The loss marks the end of the 2015 campaign for the Devils (15-8), who finished first in the MAC Freedom regular season and advanced to the conference championship game before earning a spot in this year's ECAC Tournament.
With the win, the Crusaders (14-7) advance to Sunday's final against Stevenson University at 3 p.m.
Senior forward
Summer Liberto registered both goals for the Crusaders in the win, while
Kim Davis scored her 21
st goal of the season for the Devils.
The Crusaders outshot the Devils 13-9 in the contest but the Devils held a 9-7 edge in penalty corners.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half with limited quality scoring chances.
In the 52
nd minute, Alvernia's
Andrea Wysocki sent a shot on cage that
Amy Defnet swatted away, but the carom went to Liberto, who promptly knocked it in for the game's first goal.
Moments later, Liberto surged forward toward the cage and after Defnet stuffed her first attempt, the senior forward pushed a second attempt into the back of the cage.
Just over two minutes later, Davis got the Devils back in the game when she received an entry pass from
Alicia Grotyohann and buried it in the back right corner of the cage resulting in a 2-1 game.
The Devils had one final opportunity when they earned an untimed penalty corner but they were unable to get a shot off of as the final horn sounded.
Davis' 21 goals are the second most in FDU-Florham single-season history, tying Kristen Leonardis, who accomplished the feat in 2003.
Defnet, who has been excellent in the postseason for the Devils, made seven saves in the loss.
