Men's Soccer Falls to Scarlet Raiders 3-0

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham men's soccer team was defeated by the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders 3-0 in their last non-conference match of the regular season on Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

Sophomore Frank Maggiore Jr. got the start in goal for the Devils (5-5-1) and he made several brilliant saves, but after his third of the night, he came up hurt and was replaced by senior goalkeeper Nick Mihalik.

Mihalik made one of his seven saves just minutes after entering the game but in the 34th minute, Dylan Elias got a hold of the ball on the far right side of the field and sent it over his shoulder with his back turned to the goal and it floated into the back of the net to give Rutgers-Newark (11-3) the 1-0 advantage.

At the 68th minute mark, the Scarlet Raiders were commanding the ball in Devils' territory once again and Hubert Dul had a breakaway one-on-one opportunity with Miahlik. As Dul went to take fire at the net, Mihalik rushed out and slid to deflect the ball and ward off the attack.

However, Rutgers-Newark got another chance once Anthony DeRisi got the ball and kicked it into the box on the ground to Damjan Aga, who then rifled the shot into the back of the net.

With a two goal lead and under 10 minutes left to play, Dul sent a through ball that once Sebastian Gostynski got a hold of, he dribbled it past a Devils' defender and kicked it through Mihalik's legs for the Scarlet Raiders' third and final goal of the game.

The Devils will return to action on Saturday, October 10 in Center Valley, Pa. for a MAC Freedom showdown with the DeSales University Bulldogs that is slated to start at 12 p.m.
