ST. DAVIDS, PA – In the final regular season game of their 2015 campaign, the FDU-Florham women's soccer team clipped the Eastern University Eagles 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in St. David's, Pa.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the contest, the Devils (9-9-2, 2-3-2 MAC Freedom) went on to net two consecutive goals and claim the victory over the Eagles (7-11-1, 2-5 MAC Freedom).
The Devils had some early scoring opportunities, but it was the Eagles who struck first. In the 29th minute, Courtney Davis played the ball to Emily Cole in the box and she quickly sent the ball into the back of the net to give Eastern the 1-0 lead.
FDU-Florham looked for an answer and found one in the 36th minute when freshman midfielder Gabriella Florio took a shot from outside the box and it bounced off of the Eagles' goalkeeper, Adrianna Swinehart, and into the goal for the score.
The Eagles managed to put two more shots on goal before the closing minutes of the first half, but both were saved by Devils' goalkeeper, Annie George. The junior netminder went on to make seven saves in the match.
Following another save by George to open up the second half, the Devils took control of the ball and worked their way down the field. Sophomore Justine Fernandez took aim at the Eagles' goal, but Swinehart came away with the save.
The ball was kept on the Eagles' side of the field by the Devils' offense and with the ball in the air inside the box, junior midfielder Brittni Calleo stepped up and headed it into the net to put FDU-Florham up by a score.
The Eagles responded to Calleo's score by picking up their intensity on the offensive side of the ball as they continued to pour on the shots at the Devils' net. However, George was magnificent, rejecting all of Eastern's shots sent her way and helping the Devils seal the conference victory.
Despite picking up the win, the Devils finished a game shy of securing a spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament.
