MADISON, N.J. – On a day to honor the seniors, the FDU-Florham women's soccer team dropped a MAC Freedom match 4-1 to the No. 14-ranked Misericordia University Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.
Junior midfielder Brittni Calleo was responsible for the Devils' (8-8-2, 1-3-2 MAC Freedom) lone goal as she netted her first score of the season late in the second half.
The Cougars (14-2-1, 6-0 MAC Freedom) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three early goals in the first half. The first score came at the three-minute mark when the team's leading scorer, Alex Gallagher, sent a booming ball into the back of the net from 15-yards out.
Misericordia came right back onto the Devils' side of the field in the seventh minute. Gallagher controlled the ball and sent it over to the right side of the field, where Kristen Ritter used a soft touch pass to set up Hannah Larkin for the score.
In the 13th minute, Alyssa Manno sent the ball into the box on a corner kick and Alexa Alchevsky tracked the ball and headed it into the net to give the Cougars the 3-0 advantage.
The Devils first two shots on the contest came late in the first half off of the foot of Justine Fernandez, but both attempts were sent wide of the net.
Halfway through the second half, Jacqueline Stevens placed a ball on the net and Devils' goalkeeper was unable to get to it in time. However, Calleo ran over and used her body to prevent the ball from going in for a goal.
The Cougars did get another shot at the Devils' net and in the 75th minute, Jordyn Powell sent a through ball into the box and Rileigh Jo Evitts kicked it into the back of the net.
Trailing by four goals, the Devils worked their way down the field and with less than 10 minutes left to play, a handball was called on a Misericordia defender. The Devils were awarded a free kick and Calleo stepped up and buried the shot from 15-yards out to trim the deficit to three.
The Devils will face off against Drew University in the Battle of Madison Ave. for their next match on Thursday, October 29 at 7 p.m.
