PURCHASE, N.Y. – The FDU-Florham women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to Manhattanville College at GoValiants.com Field on Wednesday night.
FDU-Florham (8-7-2, 1-1-2 MAC Freedom) outshot Manhattanville (5-9, 1-4 MAC Freedom) 19-17, including a 13-8 in shots on goal but were unable to break through against goalkeeper
Dolores Diemick, who made several difficult saves to earn the win.
With the loss, the Devils now sit in fifth place in the conference standings and trail Eastern University by one game for the final spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament. FDU-Florham takes on Eastern in the regular season finale on October 31.
The Valiants jumped on top 3:17 into play when
Christie DeMarco forced a turnover and then eluded Devils goalkeeper
Annie George before tapping the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
The game appeared headed to the break 1-0 until with 11 seconds to go, DeMarco delivered an on-point through ball to
Kerri Durkin, who sent a shot on frame which caught the inside of the crossbar and trickled over the goal line for a two-goal Valiants edge.
Out of halftime, the Devils earned a quality chance in the 62
nd minute as
Missy Quinn came charging in on a cross into the box and shot it toward the left corner of the net but
Diemicke made a diving stop to keep the shutout intact.
With three minutes to go, Demicke robbed the Devils again with another diving save. The junior netminder lunged toward the left post to knock away a hooking shot by
Morgan Sartori that was destined for the back of the net.
Junior midfielder
Brittni Calleo led the Devils offense with four shots on goal, while George made six stops in the loss.
The Devils host #14 Misericordia University this Saturday, October 24 at 4 p.m. in their final home game of the season. Prior to the start of the contest, the Devils will honor the team's three seniors.
