EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Junior forward Gabby Diaco scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to give the FDU-Florham women's soccer team a 2-1 victory in their MAC Freedom opener against the Wilkes University Colonels on Friday night in Edwardsville, Pa.
In the 15th minute, freshman Nicollete VanDuysen sent a through ball that split several Colonels' (3-7-1, 0-1 MAC Freedom) defenders and ended up in front of Kristina Ragolia, who rifled the shot into the lower left part of the net to give FDU-Florham (6-5, 1-0 MAC Freedom) the early 1-0 advantage.
Looking to answer, the Colonels placed a couple of shots at the Devils' net, but junior goalkeeper Annie George sent them away. George played brilliant in goal, tallying eight saves on the night.
Despite being outshot 8-3 in the first half of play, the Devils still managed to hold onto their one goal lead.
Four minutes into the second half, Michaela Oliverio sent a shot at the net for the Colonels but it banged off of the crossbar. Wilkes maintained their offensive attack and took several more shots at George, but she continued to rack up the saves.
However, in the 64th minute, the Colonels finally broke through and Emily Wirth scored off of an assist from Nicolette Towlen to knot the game up at 1-1.
As the two teams continued to battle in a tightly contested conference match, Grace Fazzi took aim at the Devils' net in the 79th minute, but once again, George came up with a huge save to keep the score even.
Once the final horn of regulation sounded, the score remained 1-1 and after an overtime period that saw neither team score a goal, a second overtime began.
Five minutes in, the Devils earned a corner kick and junior Brittni Calleo sent the ball into the box. As the ball traveled through the air, Diaco jumped up and headed it into the net for the game-winner.
The Devils will return to Madison for their next match on Thursday, October 8, when they take on Brooklyn College at 7 p.m.
