Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by: Matthew Tedino

No. 1 Devils Claw their way past the Cougars 90-56

Five members of the top-ranked FDU-Florham women's basketball team scored in double-figures as they downed the Misericordia Cougars 90-56 Saturday afternoon at the Ferguson Recreation Center.

Senior Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) recorded her second double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points to go along with 12 rebounds, six steals and three blocks.

The Cougars (0-19, 0-8 Freedom) came to play in the first half and were able to keep up with the fast-tempo that the Devils (19-0, 8-0 Freedom) are familiar playing with. Every basket put in by the Devils, was ensued by a Cougars score for majority of the half.

With less than eight minutes to play in the first half, Shelby Brochetti of the Cougars stole the ball and it resulted in a Justine Seely layup to give Misericordia a two point advantage. However, senior guard Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa.) was fouled on a 3-point shot and sank all three free throws to put the Devils back on top. From that point on, the Devils did not relinquish their lead and began to go on a run.

The Devils recorded three straight steals that resulted in three consecutive layups. FDU-Florham shot 4-for-4 from the field and began to pull away from the Cougars with a 13-0 run.

Dayon put together a truly remarkable first half, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor for 13 points, while grabbing nine rebounds. She also had three blocks and four steals in the half. Sophomore guard Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) also joined in on the offensive end with 13 of her 15 points coming in the first half.

When the halftime buzzer sounded, the Devils were leading 48-34.

At the start of the second half, the Devils were back at it and began to build on their already large lead. By the blink of an eye, a 19 point lead for the Devils with 12 minutes left to play turned into a 39 point advantage following a 22-4 run by FDU-Florham.

Junior forward Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) has been dominating the competition in the paint and on the glass this season. Against the Cougars, she totaled 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Lively added 14 points, while Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) also knocked down several shots for 12 points of her own.

The top-ranked Devils got it done on the defensive end in front of the home crowd. Their endless high-intensity pressure forced the Cougars to turn the ball over 32 times in the contest. FDU-Florham scored 35 points off turnovers and also dominated on the offensive glass, reeling in 20 offensive boards, compared to the Cougars 11.

The No.1-ranked Devils extended their winning streak to now 52 straight games and will be back in action on Wednesday, February 4, as they take on King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. at 6 p.m.
