DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -- The FDU-Florham men's basketball team left it all on the floor Wednesday night, but came up short as they fell to the Delaware Valley Aggies, 74-65 in a Freedom Conference showdown in Doylestown, Pa.
The Aggies (10-6, 5-0 Freedom), who sit atop the Freedom Conference, feature some size in their lineup with the lengthy 6-foot-9 junior center,
Manny Ochenje, who towered over the Devils lineup. It was a tough matchup for the Devils (1-15, 0-5 Freedom), however, they did not back down and the 6-foot-4 freshman forward
Veon Lassiter (Elizabeth, N.J.) drew the assignment on Ochenje.
Lassiter earned his first start since early January and kicked off the game by scoring the first four points for the Devils. It turned out to be a memorable night for Lassiter, who scored 14 of his career-high 17 points in the first half, while also bringing in seven rebounds.
The Devils held a narrow lead as both teams traded buckets for majority of the half. The Aggies found their scoring from senior
Nick Sullivan who totaled 13 first half points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
At the half, the Devils and Aggies were deadlocked at 33-33.
With less than 18 minutes remaining in the game, the Aggies found their groove on the offensive end and began to pull away from the Devils with a 14-3 run to give them the largest lead of the game. Down nine points, the Devils responded with a few key baskets to climb back into the game, including two 3-point shots made by
Tymiak Hawkins (Philadelphia, Pa.) to cut the deficit to one.
However, that was the closest the Devils were able to come to retaking the lead as the Aggies went on an 8-0 run and eventually closed out the game at the free-throw line.
Senior guard
Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J.) finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double on the season. Hawkins was the third Devil to reach double-digit scoring in the contest with a career-high 10 points of his own to go along with six rebounds.
The Devils are back in Madison on Saturday, January 24, to take on the Wilkes Colonels at 3 p.m. Â
