Fernandez Scores Twice, Devils Topple Bulldogs 4-0

MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham women's soccer team won their second-straight game on Monday night, blanking the Brooklyn College Bulldogs 4-0.

Freshman Justine Fernandez (Iselin, N.J./JFK) scored her first two collegiate goals in the victory for the Devils (4-4-1, 0-0 Freedom), who have outscored their opponents 9-1 over the last two games.

Fifteen minutes into action, FDU-Florham was awarded a penalty kick, which Fernandez promptly deposited in the back of the net to give the Devils a 1-0 edge. Just three minutes later, senior Kim Overland (Andover, N.J./Newton) sent a perfect cross into the box and Gabby Diaco (Montville, N.J./Montville) did the rest to increase the lead to 2-0. Diaco's score was her third of the season and her first strike since netting two goals in the Devils' season opener.

In total, the Devils fired 12 shots in the opening stanza and entered the break with the two-goal advantage.

Overland continued to spread the wealth in the second half. In the 50th minute, the senior sent another cross into the box, which Fernandez fired past Brooklyn goalkeeper Michelle Cranston, to increase the Devils' cushion to 3-0.

The three goals were plenty for the stingy FDU-Florham defense. The Devils backline limited the Bulldogs (3-5) to six shots in the contest and only one corner kick.

Brittni Calleo (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) tacked onto the lead with a fourth goal later in the half, courtesy of an assist by Ashley Granato (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), which resulted in game's final score. Calleo now has five goals on the season and three in the Devils' last two games, both team-highs.

Sophomore goalkeeper Annie George (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) only needed to turn away one shot in 45 minutes of action to earn the victory as senior Julia Perry (Newton, N.J./Newton) came on in relief to play the second half.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham will set out to make it three straight when they host Albright College this Wednesday, October 1st at 7 p.m.
