Devils Late Rally Falls Short Against Cougars

Box Score UNION, N.J. – Despite four goals from Courtney Rendinaro (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), the FDU-Florham Devils women's lacrosse team was defeated 15-12 by Kean University on Monday.

The Devils scored the last three goals of the game but ultimately ran out of time and with the loss are now 3-7 on the season. Kean senior Ciara Mastrodomenico led the way for the Cougars with five goals in the victory, as they improved to 6-3 on the campaign.

Less than a minute into play, the Cougars snagged a 1-0 lead but Devils freshman Brienna Reasoner (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) responded with a goal to even the score at 1-1. The Cougars tallied the next three scores, two of which came from Kean sophomore Jordan Blenda and led 4-1.

Trailing 8-4, Reasoner cut the deficit to three goals with her second strike of the day, but the Cougars got it back with five seconds to play in the first half and entered intermission with a four-goal advantage.

The Cougars scored four of the first five goals in the second half to stake their largest lead of the game at 13-6 with 15:50 to play. FDU-Florham remained undeterred and after back-to-back goals by Rendinaro and Joelle Manganella (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) they were within five. After another Cougars goal, the Devils netted three-unanswered goals in the final three minutes but it was too little too late as Kean held on for the 15-12 victory.

FDU-Florham junior Caitlyn McGinley (Mount Laurel, N.J./Camden Catholic) did a good job pressuring the Cougars throughout the contest and caused three turnovers, in addition to scooping up three ground balls in the loss. The Devils committed 21 fouls compared to only five infractions by the home team and dropped the contest despite holding an advantage on ground balls (25-22) and turnovers (21-24).

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham returns home to take on Misericordia University this Wednesday, April 2nd with start time slated for 4 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
