Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils men's basketball team notched their most complete victory of the season by defeating Wilkes University 81-65 on Wednesday night at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
The Devils (12-10, 7-4 Freedom) lit up the scoreboard for a season-high 48 first-half points including eight three-pointers and led by 22 at the break. The Colonels (8-13, 3-8 Freedom) were unable to mount a comeback in the second half and the Devils ultimately prevailed with a 16-point victory to complete the two-game season-sweep.
Four Devils tallied double-figure point totals, led by junior guard
Kevin Furlong's (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Furlong added four rebounds, three assists and three steals to his ledger in the win. The Devils caused 21 turnovers in the contest, which resulted in several transition baskets, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The Colonels held an early 8-3 lead before the Devils rattled off 13-straight points to claim a 16-8 advantage with 12:35 remaining in the opening stanza. After a layup by Wilkes forward
Nick Wilkins, John Flete (Flemington, N.J./North Hampton CC) drilled a three and turned a steal into a lay-in which built the FDU-Florham lead to double-digits. Flete finished with 13 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals on the night. Next, Furlong knocked down a jumper and
Trevor Sykes (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) hit a pair of free throws to provide the Devils with a 25-10 lead midway through the half.
At the break, the Devils held a 48-26 lead thanks to their hot-shooting. The Devils knocked down 51.9 percent of their shots from the floor, while limiting the Colonels to 30.3 percent over the first 20 minutes of action. Senior forward
Will Green (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had a monster first half, with 12 points and eight rebounds to ignite the Devils attack. Green earned his ninth double-double of the season by finishing with 12 points and 10 boards in 27 minutes of action.
Early in the second half, Wilkes managed to cut the Devils lead to 16 but FDU-Florham countered with a back-breaking 12-0 run to go up 63-35 with 14:22 in the contest. The Devils maintained control for the remainder of the game and secured their 12
th victory of the season.
In the win, Sykes did an excellent job on the defensive end and came up with three steals and a blocked shot to go along with his 17 points on 50 percent shooting.
Pat Furst paced the Colonels with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while
Tyler Jackson and
Devin Dunn each totaled 11 points for Wilkes in the loss.
The win keeps the Devils tied with Misericordia University for second place in the Freedom Conference standings. Both teams trail DeSales University by one game.
