No. 1 Devils Roll to 88-51 Victory Over Cross-Street Rival Rangers

MADISON, N.J. – Following a celebratory ceremony, where they received their 2014 NCAA National Championship rings, the top-ranked FDU-Florham women's basketball team cruised to an 88-51 victory over cross-street rival Drew University at the Ferguson Recreation Center on Tuesday night.

Prior to the game, the Devils (8-0, 2-0 Freedom) were presented with their rings, as well as, resolutions from alumnus Gov. Richard Codey, Fairleigh Dickinson University president Sheldon Drucker and FDU-Florham provost Peter Woolley.

FDU-Florham carried the excitement and momentum from the pregame festivities into the start of the game. Midway through the half, the Devils had staked a 21-12 lead and assumed control of the contest.

The Devils swarming defense forced the Rangers (5-2, 2-0 Landmark) to commit 12 first-half turnovers, while limiting Drew to 10 made baskets.

With 7:50 to play in the opening stanza, the Rangers cut the deficit to five points with back-to-back layups from Breana Wilson and Courtney Stephens. But the Devils countered with a 7-0 run, spurred on by a 3-pointer by Danielle Leguillou (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a pair of layups by Delisha Thompson (East Orange, N.J.), which built the lead to 12 points at 30-18.

FDU-Florham extended its lead to 18 points at the break, highlighted by Leigh-Ann Lively's (Bangor, Pa.) 3-pointer at the buzzer, which sent the Devils into intermission with a 42-24 advantage.

Junior forward Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) led all scorers at the break with eight points, while adding five rebounds to her ledger. Brown finished with 16 points and nine boards in the victory.

The Devils stormed out of the break and almost immediately stretched their lead to 22 points as Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) took a setup from Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) and buried a 3-pointer, which she promptly followed with a fast-break layup off of another helper from Dayon.

With the game out of reach, the Devils built their cushion to as much as 39 points before the final buzzer. FDU-Florham continued to play tenacious on the defensive end of the floor and turned the Rangers over 18 more times in the second half, ultimately causing 30 in the contest. The pressure resulted in 35 points off of turnovers in total. McDonough and Brown were exceptionally stout on defense and finished with five and four steals respectively

The Devils received a tremendous contribution from their reserves in the win, led by Lively's 17 points and Leguillou's 12-point effort. In total, five Devils tallied double-figures.

In defeat, Ryan Jackson notched a double-double for the Rangers with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Wilson added 12 points and six boards.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham has 20 days off before their next contest, which is against University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point December 29th at the D3hoops.com classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
