MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham men's basketball team fell 71-51 to the Drew University Rangers on Tuesday night at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
It was a woeful shooting night for the Devils (1-7, 0-2 Freedom), who shot 27 percent from the field. The Rangers (6-2, 2-0 Landmark) took advantage of the Devils struggles on offense and pieced together several big runs throughout the course of the game, including a 14-5 run with under 10 minutes to go in the first half. Once the Rangers established their lead on their first run, the Devils found themselves unable to climb back into the game.
The Rangers attacked the paint early and often, trying to score in the low post. The Devils had a hard time containing
Ozan Yucetepe, who scored six straight points for the Rangers midway through the first half. However, the Devils countered with freshman forward
Veon Lassiter (Elizabeth, N.J.), who finished the game with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Senior guard
Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J.) recorded a team-high 16 points and buried three 3-point shots, but it was not enough to keep the Devils in the game. The Devils could not find their rhythm from the field and failed to get quality looks at the basket as the Rangers defense clamped down on the pressure.
The Devils entered the second half down 35-26, but the Rangers went on another run. This time it was a 14-2 run that was sparked by a big dunk from junior forward
Jason Huelbig. The Rangers were led by junior guard
Mike Klinger, who scored a game-high 17 points and junior guard
Kevin Herring II who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. To put the game away, the Rangers continued their attack and with less than 15 minutes left to play, they compiled a 15-3 run.
With the offensive struggles that the Devils endured, sophomore forward
Donte Ali (Willingboro, N.J.) was able to bring in 15 total rebounds, eight coming on the offensive end. Ali also recorded a season-high three blocks in the game.
