MADISON, N.J. – A swarming full court press applied by the No. 1 ranked FDU-Florham women's basketball team helped propel them to an 83-56 win over the King's College Monarchs Saturday afternoon in a Freedom Conference showdown at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
The Devils (7-0, 2-0 Freedom) constant pressure proved to be too much for the Monarchs (3-4, 1-1 Freedom) to handle as FDU-Florham forced 31 turnovers in the game and ran away with an early lead. For the first time all season, every Devils player recorded at least one steal in the contest.
After falling behind 8-3 to start the game, the Devils found their groove and settled into a comfortable offensive tempo. Junior guard
Alicia Cox (Vineland, N.J.) was at the helm and put together eight of her 13 total points in the first half, while shooting 4-of-4 from the field.
Sophomore guard
Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) was a spark off the bench and scored a team-high 16 points in the contest. The Devils fed off of the hot shooting from Cox and McDonough and turned that into a 24-6 run to close the half.
Entering the second half up 43-27, the Devils dialed up the intensity and the defense went back to work. The Devils tallied 15 steals in the second half alone and wreaked havoc on any Monarchs' player who touched the ball.
After being held scoreless in the first half, senior guard
Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) found her rhythm in the second half, scoring all 11 of her points on 4-of-7 shooting, including two made baskets from beyond the arc.
Being heavily undersized proved not to be an issue for the Devils as they managed to grab 49 rebounds, compared to the Monarchs 46 in the game. Junior forward
Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) put forth another impressive performance on the glass, reeling in a team-high 13 rebounds along with eight points and three steals.
It was an all-around dominant performance put forth by the Devils and they were efficient on both sides of the ball. The Devils saw a large contribution from their bench in the scoring department. Every player for the Devils scored and the bench combined for 35 points on the afternoon.
The Monarchs offense was limited but sophomore forward
Kayla Feairheller managed to score a team-high 16 points.
Next up for the Devils: FDU-Florham will host their local rivals, the Drew University Rangers, on Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
