GALLOWAY, N.J. – The No. 1 FDU-Florham Devils women's basketball team moved to 2-0 and won the Stockton College Tip-Off Classic by defeating the host Ospreys 76-64 on Sunday afternoon at The Sports Center.
FDU-Florham (2-0) senior guard
Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa.) was named Tournament MVP after totaling 17 points in the weekend's final game. The senior guard scored also 17 points in the season opener on Saturday against Hunter College and added four rebounds and three steals in the two-day tournament.
Additionally, Lively was joined by senior teammate
Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) on the All-Tournament Team. Dayon stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists in Sunday's tournament finale and shot 50 percent from the floor.
The Ospreys (1-1) jumped out to a 10-5 lead, however, the Devils countered with a 12-0 run that spanned four minutes and they never trailed again. Dayon came up with six first-half steals as the Devils turned the Ospreys over 10 times in the first half. The agitating FDU-Florham defense forced Stockton into 21 turnovers in the contest.
Fifteen of Lively's 17 points came in the first half as the senior sharpshooter knocked down all three of her three-point attempts and the defending NCAA champs led 44-31 at the break. The stifling Devils defense held the Ospreys to just 23.3 percent shooting in the first half including 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Both teams came out cold in the second half and the first shot did not go down until nearly three minutes into play.
The Ospreys cut the 14-point deficit down to five points when
Lauren Alwan grabbed a series of offensive rebounds and finally converted the layup, which resulted in a 56-51 FDU-Florham lead with 6:38 to play.
After a three-pointer by FDU-Florham sophomore guard
Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.), Stockton's
Alex Nardoza scored four-straight and brought the Ospreys within four at 59-55. FDU-Florham responded with a bucket by junior forward
Shalette Brown (Franklin, N.J.) and two hoops from Dayon. The final result was a 12-3 spurt by the Devils that rebuilt their cushion to 13 points and sealed the victory.
McDonough finished with 17 points and three assists, while Brown added five points and a season-best 15 rebounds in the win. The Devils have now won 35 straight-games dating back to last season.
For Stockton, Nardoza led the team with 14 points and
Sasha Williams picked up a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.
