GALLOWAY, N.J. – The top-ranked FDU-Florham women's basketball team opened their season with a 104-61 victory over Hunter College at the Stockton College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 1 Devils (1-0) featured a balanced attack in the victory as five different players totaled double-digit scoring efforts.
Freshman guard
Danielle Leguillou (Staten Island, N.Y.) led all scorers with 18 points, while junior guard
Alicia Cox (Vineland, N.J.) filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists in the win.
Hunter's
Kristen Markoe notched a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawks in the loss.
FDU-Florham's defense appeared to be in mid-season form as the Devils forced the Hawks into 32 turnovers in the contest.
The Devils came out of the gates blazing and opened up an 18-4 lead. Senior guard
Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa.) scored 10 of the team's first 15 points. Lively finished the game with 17 points and knocked down 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
At the break, FDU-Florham held a 49-35 lead despite allowing the Hawks to shoot 54.2 percent from the field.
In the second half, the Devils hit the gas and used a 19-6 run to blow the game open.
Head Coach
Marc Mitchell utilized his bench and dispersed playing time evenly in the win, as all ten players played ten minutes or more.
Sophomore point guard
Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) totaled 14 points and four assists on a tidy 5-of-7 from the floor, while junior forward
Shalette Brown (Franklin,N.J.) added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Devils in the game.
Next up for the Devils:FDU-Florham will play the winner of Morrisville State/Stockton College tomorrow at 4 p.m.
