MADISON, N.J. -- On a record-breaking senior night at Robert T. Shields Field, the FDU-Florham football team (0-10, 0-9 MAC) dropped their final contest of the season 45-27 to Lycoming College (8-2, 7-2 MAC) on Friday night.
In the loss, FDU-Florham freshman wide receiver
Malik Pressley (Sayreville, N.J.) broke the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) single-game reception record by hauling in 18 catches for 163 yards and three scores. In addition, Pressley capped off an impressive first season in Madison by setting the program's single-season mark with 78 catches, while totaling 718 yards and seven touchdowns.
Unfortunately for the FDU-Florham, Pressley was not the only player to make history on Friday night. Lycoming senior running back
Craig Needhammer ran for a program-record 299 yards in the game and broke the school record for career rushing yards with 3,713 over his four seasons with the Warriors.
On the Devils first play from scrimmage, junior quarterback
Tyler Maurer (West Milford, N.J.) hit Pressley for an 81-yard touchdown strike, which put FDU-Florham in front 6-0. The Devils botched the snap on the point-after attempt and the lead remained at six points.
The Warriors countered with a five-play, 55-yard drive, that was capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Tyler Jenny to
Ryan Umpleby and went ahead 7-6.
FDU-Florham defensive lineman
Bill Medve (Randolph, N.J.) forced a fumble on Lycoming's next possession, which gave the Devils excellent starting field position at the Warrriors 38-yard line. The Devils only managed one yard on four plays and turned the ball over on downs. Needhammer finished the ensuing possession with a three-yard touchdown run to give the Warriors at 14-6 advantage.
In the second quarter, FDU-Florham punter
Holden Ehrhart's (Westfield, N.J.) punt was blocked Lycoming's
John Pawloski and consequently recovered by
Phil Schron who returned it to the house and increased the Warriors lead to 21-6.
The Devils responded by marching 77 yards on nine plays to cut the deficit to one score at 21-13. Maurer connected with Pressley on a four-yard pass to close the scoring drive. The Warriors picked up a field goal prior to halftime and entered the break with a 24-13 edge.
On their first drive of the second stanza, Maurer led the Devils on a seven-play, 77-yard excursion down the field and found Pressley in the end zone for the third time with a 13-yard touchdown pass, which cut the Warriors' lead to five points. Unfortunately, the Devils' special teams issues continued and the extra point attempt was blocked.
The Warriors increased their lead on the next possession as Needhammer went untouched on a 23-yard touchdown run, which built Lycoming's lead to 31-19. Lycoming put the game out of reach with another score early in the fourth quarter, as Jenny found senior
Nick Mongiello for a one-yard touchdown connection.
The Devils posted an eight-play, 41-yard drive late in the quarter to close within nine points at 38-27 thanks to a tipped pass that found tight end
Joe LeBlanc (Madison, N.J.) in the end zone, however, Needhammer then closed out the win for Lycoming with a 50-yard scoring rush.
FDU-Florham junior running back
Anthony Ognibene (Chester, N.Y.) totaled 44 yards on 11 carries and added four catches for 62 yards in the loss, while Maurer tossed for 353 yards and four touchdowns and completed 34-of-58 passes.
