Devils Blanked by Scarlet Raiders 3-0

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils (5-5-2, 1-0 Freedom) ran into a hot Scarlet Raiders team that has now won five straight games, led by their leading goal scorer, Sara Corson. Corson came into the night with eight goals on the season and added three more with a hat trick.

The first goal came in the 32nd minute when Corson booted the ball past diving sophomore goalkeeper, Annie George (Denville, N.J.), from 25 yards out to give the Scarlet Raiders (9-4-1, 2-2 NJAC) a 1-0 advantage.

Moments later, a through ball was sent past midfield to a streaking Corson who finished off the play by shooting one into the back of the net for her second goal of the night. In the 41st minute, the Devils looked to get a goal of their own when Marissa Salava (Robbinsville, N.J.) sent a ball at the net. Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper, Diana Aviles, was unable to reel the ball in and it poked loose. Sophomore Brittni Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) came charging in tried to put one in the back of the net but a diving Aviles prevented the goal, halting the Devils attack. Aviles finished the game with five saves.

The Scarlet Raiders managed to tack on one more goal when Paige Lazar took a shot in the 66th minute. Lazar's shot took a bounce off the crossbar and was sent right at Corson who buried her third and final goal in the game.

After being named ECAC Division III South Region goalkeeper of the week, George picked up four saves on the night, three coming in the first half. The Devils were outshot 12-10 in the contest, but they managed to put five out of their ten shots on goal.

Next up for the Devils:
