MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham women's soccer team was blanked for the second-straight outing, falling to Wilkes University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.
It was a tale of two halves on Saturday, as the Devils (5-6-2, 1-1 Freedom) outshot the Lady Colonels (8-5, 1-1 Freedom) 8-2 over the first 45 minutes, however, Wilkes turned the tables in the second stanza with eight shots to just three for FDU-Florham.
After 15 minutes without a shot by either side, FDU-Florham sophomore
Brittni Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) fired at Wilkes' goalkeeper
Lisa Semetti but was turned away. Less than two minutes later, Wilkes sophomore
Brittany Gurreri scored on the Lady Colonels first shot attempt of the game. A bouncing ball in the box landed in front of Gurreri, who launched at the ball with a diving header to net the first goal of the contest.
The Devils responded with pressure, as freshman forward
Justine Fernandez (Iselin, N.J.) earned two excellent scoring chances but Semetti stopped both. Just 30 seconds later, a Calleo corner kick provided another dangerous chance for the Devils but junior
Kelly Roche's (Haddon Twp, N.J.) header was snagged by Semetti. Semetti made seven of her 10 saves in the first half to keep the Devils off of the board.
The second half began the same way for the Lady Colonels, as they found the back of the net on their first shot attempt.
Sarah Wasley delivered a perfect thru ball across midfield, which provided
Shelby Trumbo with a one-on-one breakaway against FDU-Florham goalkeeper
Annie George (Denville, N.J.) that she converted into a 2-0 Wilkes lead.
In the 58th minute, the Lady Colonels tacked on an insurance goal when
Grace Fazzi eluded George and deposited a shot into an empty net.
