MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham women's soccer team rallied from one goal down to defeat the Eastern University Eagles 2-1 at Robert T. Shields Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils (5-4-2, 1-0 Freedom) passed their first Freedom Conference test of the season and are unbeaten in their last four outings.
Just over eight minutes into play, the Eagles (3-9, 0-1 Freedom) fired the first strike, when senior
Emily Roquemore lobbed the ball into the box setting up the team's leading scorer
Emily Cole. Cole followed by lobbing a shot over Devils' goalkeeper
Annie George's (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) head for the game's first goal.
The two teams battled to a stalemate during the remainder of the period and the Eagles entered intermission with a one-nil advantage. The Eagles held a narrow 5-4 shot advantage at the conclusion of a crisply played first 45 minutes.
FDU-Florham surged out of the halftime break to set the tone early, as sophomore
Brittni Calleo (Bayville,N.J./Central Regional) fired a missile over the top of the net 30 seconds into the stanza. Calleo's offensive prowess represented a sign of things to come for the Devils, who attempted 10 shots in the period.
In the 52nd minute, Calleo knocked home the equalizer off of an assist from sophomore
Missy Orlando (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional). Orlando placed a perfect feed into the box and Calleo hit it past Eastern's sophomore goalkeeper
Jules Leco. Two minutes later, freshman back
Missy Quinn (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) served a textbook corner kick into the box and onto the foot of freshman forward
Justine Fernandez (Iselin, N.J./JFK), who promptly sent the ball over to FDU-Florham defender
Kelly Roche (Haddon, Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.). Roche quickly sent the ball past Leco, which put the Devils ahead for good. The goal was Roche's first of the season and the second of her career.
The Devils defense made the one-goal lead stand up by locking in and neutralizing the Eagles' attack for the duration of the contest. With two minutes remaining in regulation, the Eagles dialed up the pressure. A golden opportunity for the Eagles was thwarted when Quinn nailed a well-timed slide tackle to stop the attack. In the 89th minute, George stepped up and snagged a header from Eastern freshman
Allison Speece, which sealed the victory.
In the win, Calleo registered her team-leading sixth goal of the season, while George stopped two shots to earn the victory.
