MADISON, N.J. -- A late overtime goal from senior captain
Tommy Asselta (Bethpage, N.Y.) secured the Devils a 1-0 victory over the DeSales University Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Madison.
FDU-Florham (5-8-3, 2-2 Freedom) dominated the possession of the ball and took countless shots at the DeSales (5-10-1, 0-4 Freedom) net, but kept coming up empty. In the 75
th minute, sophomore
Gio Aiello (Morristown, N.J.) sent a strike at the goal but it sailed just high.
Following the Aiello miss, it seemed as if overtime was imminent until junior
Chaz Armand (Atlanta, Ga.) dribbled the ball into the box with just seconds remaining in the game and drew a hand ball on a DeSales (5-10-1, 0-4 Freedom) defender.
Asselta stepped up and took the penalty kick for the Devils. He sent the ball to the left but the Bulldogs goalkeeper,
Damien Romaine, made the save. Romaine handled the Devils attack extremely well, racking up seven saves in the game. Asselta and the Devils remained optimistic as the two teams entered overtime deadlocked at 0-0.
In overtime, the Bulldogs were the first to strike, taking two shots at the Devils goal, but sophomore goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik (Wayne, N.J.) handled them with ease. Mihalik finished the contest with four saves.
Something was brewing in the 98
th minute when the Devils were carefully controlling the ball and worked their way into the box. Sophomore midfielder
Dylan Meyler (Somerdale, N.J.) placed a soft touch on the ball over to Asselta who took the pass and fired at the net. Asselta buried the shot and got his redemption, sealing the overtime win for the Devils.
The Devils, who have now won two of their last three games, outshot the Bulldogs 18-6 in the game. Asselta now moves into first on the team in goals with four on the season. This was the Devils third shutout victory of the season, the first since September 7th, against St. Joseph's College (LI).
