Devils Can't Fend Off Lions in 38-20 Loss

READING, Pa. – The Albright College Lions scored the final 21 points of the game to come from behind and defeat the FDU-Florham football team 38-20 on Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.

The Devils (0-5, 0-4 MAC) held a 20-17 lead in the third quarter but the Lions (2-4 , 1-4 MAC) roared back with 21-unanswered points to steal the victory.

In the loss, FDU-Florham freshman wide receiver Malik Pressley (Sayreville, N.J.) tied a school-record with 13 receptions. The freshman wide out had a career day by totaling 195 yards and two scores in the contest.

Albright's Malik Gilmore blocked two punts, returning one for a touchdown, while sophomore running back Danny Tighe ran for a career-high 143 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions in the victory.

After forcing a three-and-out, the Devils made the most of their first possession of the game. Junior quarterback Tyler Maurer (West Milford, N.J.) took advantage of prime field position and an Albright personal foul to navigate the Devils into the red zone. Maurer then completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Pressley and gave the Devils a 7-0 lead.

Albright return man Gerrod Gainer took the ensuing kickoff 58 yards down to the FDU-Florham 37-yard line. Lions' quarterback Pat Wise completed the drive nine plays later by hitting Dan Grillo for a 10-yad touchdown strike to even the score at 7-7.

Maurer and the Devils' offense countered with a seven-play, 80-yard drive. The junior quarterback completed a 20-yard pass to running back James Ognibene (Chester, N.Y.) then he hit Pressley for 32 yards down to the Albright 22-yard line. After a sack, Maurer connected with Pressley for their second score of the day, this one a 24-yard strike, which put the Devils back in front 14-7.

On the kickoff, Gainer broke loose once again. The Lions' returner cruised 57 yards and Albright's drive began at the Devils 37-yard line. On fourth-and-four, Devils' cornerback Mickey Weiks (Wharton, N.J.) ended the Lions drive by intercepting Wise's pass. Weiks' pick was his first of the season.

In the second quarter, the Lions marched 48 yards in 11 plays down to the Devils nine-yard line but FDU-Florham's defense held strong and limited the home team to a short field goal. That score remained at halftime with the Devils leading 14-10.

The Lions took their first lead of the game on their first drive of the second half. Starting in Devils territory, Tighe rushed for 25 yards, then Wise hit Josh Macleod for 10 yards down to the FDU-Florham eight-yard line. Tighe finished off the drive with an eight-yard touchdown scamper, which put the Lions on top 17-14.

FDU-Florham wasted no time reclaiming their lead as the Devils marched 74 yards on seven plays on their next drive. Pressley was sensational on the trip, snagging 30 and 13 yard receptions, while Maurer rushed for 19 yards. Ognibene capped the drive in pay dirt by trotting in from four-yards out and the Devils went ahead 20-17. FDU-Florham place kicker Sean Gavin's (Upton, Mass.) extra point attempt was blocked and the lead remained at three.

Unfortunately, the game proceeded to go south for the Devils. Late in the quarter, the Lions took over at the Devils 41-yard line and only needed six plays to find the end zone. Tighe finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge and the Lions led 24-20.

Following a three-and-out, Devils' punter Holden Ehrhart's (Westfield, N.J.) punt was blocked by Gilmore, who promptly pounced on the bouncing ball in the end zone for an Albright touchdown.

Ehrhart's punt on the next possession was also blocked, which set the Lions up for the final score. Wise hit Vinny Williams for a 10-yard touchdown pass, which resulted in the 38-20 final.

The Lions defense limited the Devils to minus-seven rushing yards in the contest and sacked Maurer five times. However, Maurer was efficient in the loss, tossing for 277 yards and the two scores on 24-of-30 passing. The 80 percent completion clip is a career-best for the junior quarterback.

Devils' senior defensive tackle Robert Loneker (Kenilworth, N.J.) led the defense with 10 tackles in the game.

Next up for the Devils:
The Devils will host King's College next Saturday, October 18th in the homecoming game at 1 p.m.
