No. 9 Devils Continue Winning Ways with Victory Over Eagles

Box Score ST.DAVIDS, Pa. – The No. 9 Devils (16-0, 5-0 MAC) used a 14-0 run to pull away from Eastern University (9-7, 4-1 MAC) and hand the Eagles their first in-conference loss of the season 76-58 on Thursday night in Freedom Conference action.

Junior guard Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa./Notre Dame) was red-hot from long-range and knocked down five three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points. FDU sophomore forward Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) notched her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

The Devils held the narrowest of leads at the break (29-28) thanks to a strong effort on the offensive glass. FDU pulled down five offensive rebounds in the first half and forced 13 turnovers to enter the break with a one-point advantage.

Eastern junior guard Kaleigh Boreman opened the second half scoring with a three-pointer, giving the Eagles a 31-29 lead. With 8:31 to play, back-to-back threes by Lively and Jalessa Lewis (Irvington, N.J/Mount St. Dominic) sparked a 14-0 run for the Devils that spanned only 90 seconds. Another long-ball from Lively capped the scoring run and put FDU ahead by 16 points at 61-45.

The Devils maintained their lead the rest of the way and picked up the win to remain unbeaten. Eastern juniors Gina DiDomenico and Meghan Nowak paced the Eagles with 16 points apiece, while Emily Lavin added seven points, 11 rebounds and blocked five shots in defeat.

Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) nearly missed a double-double with 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Devils. FDU caused 20 Eastern-turnovers, while limiting their own mistakes to just four turnovers. The Devils made the most of their opportunities from the charity-stripe and knocked down 13-of-15 attempts for 86.7 percent.

FDU continues Freedom Conference play on Saturday afternoon when they take on Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. with tip slated for 12 p.m. noon.
