#22 Devils Survive Scare From Eastern, 64-63

Box Score ST. DAVIDS, PA - Sophomore forward Kyra Dayon cemented her case for Freedom Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday evening by scoring 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the twenty-second ranked College at Florham Devils to a 64-63 victory over Eastern in Freedom Conference action.  The win also gave FDU the top seed and homecourt advantage throughout the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament.

With the win, the Devils improved to 22-2 (12-1 Freedom) while the Eagles dropped to 10-14 (6-7 Freedom).

FDU got off to a fast start as they jumped out to a 15-5 lead as freshman center Rachel Groom scored six points in the opening eight minutes.  Eastern responded with a 19-9 run to tie the game at 24-24 with 3:28 left in the first half before FDU scored the next three points to take a 27-24 lead.  After Eastern cut it to 27-26, Dayon scored the final bucket of the half to give the Devils a 29-26 advantage heading into the break.

Eastern grabbed their first lead of the game, 36-35, just five minutes into the second half but the Devils went on an 18-10 run over the next eight minutes to take a 53-46 lead with 7:06 to go in the game.  The Eagles trimmed their deficit to one, 55-54, with 4:04 remaining but Dayon converted a layup and two free throws to put FDU up four, 59-55, with 1:52 to play.  Eastern again pulled to within one, 59-58, with 1:41 left but Dayon drilled a jumper on FDU's next possession to make it 61-58.  Neither team could get anything to go until Eastern made it 61-60 with 0:06 left but sophomore guard Kara Dayon was fouled and went to the line immediately after.  After she hit her first freebie, she missed her second by Kyra Dayon got the offensive rebound, was fouled, and hit both foul shots to give FDU a 64-60 lead.  With the Devils playing way off, Eastern hit a three-pointer at the buzzer but it wasn't enough as FDU earned the 64-63 victory and the top spot in the conference tournament.

Groom finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds while sophomore forward Delisha Thompson chipped in 10 points and seven boards.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at home for Pink Day against Delaware Valley beginning at 1 pm.
