SCHENECTADY, N.Y
. – Led by 22 points from
Trevor Sykes (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boy's) and
John Flete (Flemington, N.J/North Hampton CC) the FDU-Florham Devils men's basketball team claimed the 2013 Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament championship over Union College 90-73 on Sunday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.
The Devils (3-3, 0-0 MAC) earned the tournament title after completing a 2-0 weekend in Schenectady, N.Y. with wins over
Trinity College (Conn.) and the host Dutchmen. Flete was named tournament MVP for his 42 points on 14-of-21 shooting during the two-day tournament.
FDU-Florham led 33-27 at the break, thanks to an 11-point first half from senior captain
Will Green (Cranford, N.J./Cranford. Green finished the afternoon with 19 points and three rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team.
After the Dutchmen (1-4) cut the lead to four, the Devils responded with seven unanswered points to build a 40-29 lead. With 5:06 to play in regulation, Flete drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game providing the Devils with their largest lead of the contest at 23 points. The Devils held off a 17-point second-half surge from Union guard Terell Winney to claim the weekend championship.
Andrew Stress (Wrightstown, Pa./Council Rock North) pulled down nine boards which gave the Devils a 37-36 rebounding edge over the Dutchmen.
Sykes dished out a game-high eight assists in the win and joined Flete and Green on the All-Tournament Team.

FDU-Florham opens up Freedom Conference play on Wednesday night against DeSales University with tip-time slated for 8 p.m. at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
