Devils Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to Bulldogs

Box Score CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team lost a heartbreaker by the score of 2-1 in overtime to DeSales University in a Freedom Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Alexa Beaumont secured the victory for the Bulldogs just 5:48 into the overtime period with her second goal of the game.

The Devils (5-7, 2-1 MAC) could have taken over sole possession of first place in the Freedom Conference with a win, but DeSales (6-7, 2-1 MAC) moves into a five-way tie for the top spot with the victory.

Senior Lanie Andrews (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) found sophomore Alicia Grotyohann (Lafayette, N.J./Newton) for FDU's lone goal of the game at the 19:49 mark in the first half. Grotyohann now has three goals on the season. The Bulldogs quickly responded when Beaumont put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the game 24:26 into the first half.

The game remained knotted up for the rest of regulation. Both teams had ample opportunities to score, but stellar play by the two goalies forced the competition into overtime

Overtime was a back and forth fight between the two sides, with both teams seeing a fair amount of chances. Beaumont sent FDU home packing when she blasted a shot past the diving Devils goalkeeper, resulting in an important in-conference victory for the Bulldogs.

Both teams fired 15 shots apiece during the contest. FDU finished with an 11-5 edge in penalty corners.

Senior Tess Loughran (Newton, N.J./Newton) continued her strong senior season with five saves in net.  Andrews and freshman Kim Davis (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) had four shots on goal each in the loss.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU returns to action on Wednesday, October 16th for an out of conference face off against Moravian College under the lights at 7 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
