Last Second Shot Lifts Misericordia Over FDU, 65-63

Box Score DALLAS, PA - With the game tied at 63-63 and just under 0:04 remaining, Misericordia got into the paint and got a layup to fall and then didn't let the College at Florham Devils get off a shot on the other end to to beat FDU by a score of 65-63 in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 6-8 (2-2 Freedom) while the Cougars improved to 8-7 (4-0 Freedom).

Misericordia jumped out to a 19-12 advantage with 7:38 left in the first half but the Devils responded with an 11-4 run to tie the game at 23-23 with 2:01 remaining thanks to nine points from senior guard Mike Williamson.  The game was still tied, 25-25, after a layup by senior forward Derek Hall with 1:05 to go but the Cougars scored the last bucket of the half to take a 27-25 lead into intermission.

The Cougars built their lead up to nine, 42-33, with 5:48 gone by in the second half but the Devils stormed back, reeling off an 11-2 run to tie the contest at 44-44 with 10:07 to go.  Williamson was once again the catalyst, this time pouring in six points.  Misericordia came right back however, grabbing a 60-53 edge with 3:16 to go but the Devils came back once more, ripping off a 10-3 run to tie the game at 63-63 with 0:41 remaining.  During the run, junior forward Andrew Stress scored FDU's first basket before Williamson converted an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 61-58.  After a bucket by the Cougars, junior guard Trevor Sykes buried a three-pointer to make it 63-61 before Williamson tied it at 63-63 on a driving layup.  Misericordia called timeout with 0:30 remaining and 0:27 left on the shot clock.  With both clocks winding down, Jesse Urich drove down the left side of the lane and somehow squeezed a pass through traffic to Justin Grotevant who made an off-balance layup to give the Cougars the lead.  The Devils got the ball and rushed down court but couldn't get a shot off, allowing Misericordia to escape with the win.

Williamson finished with a game-high 22 points off the bench while Hall added 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Sykes and junior forward Will Green each had six points while sophomore guard Kevin Furlong tallied six assists.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at home against Eastern beginning at 8 pm.
