Will Green notched 19 points and 16 rebounds while junior forward
Derek Hall added 13 points and nine boards to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 61-59 win over King's in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 10-11 (5-5 Freedom) while the Monarchs dropped to 8-13 (3-7 Freedom).
After 11:00 of action in the first half, the game was tied at 15-15 but the Devils went on a quick 6-2 run to grab a 21-17 lead with 7:09 to go in the half. The two teams went back-and-forth after that with the Devils holding a 29-27 lead with 0:46 to after a layup from sophomore forward
Matt Argudo. King's came right back though and got the final bucket of the half with 0:08 remaining to send the game into halftime tied at 29-29.
King's held a three-point edge, 40-37, with 12:04 to go in the game when FDU went on their biggest run of the day, a 17-8 spurt that put the Devils on top by a score of 54-48 with 5:44 to play. Sophomore forward
Andrew Stress had six points in the run. The Monarchs cut their deficit to two, 54-52, after two free throws with 3:35 to go but the two squads went scoreless for the next two minutes until senior guard
Adam Katz hit a layup to put FDU up 56-52 with 1:39 to play. King's cut it to one, 56-55, after a three-pointer with 0:39 to go but junior guard
Mike Williamson calmly hit two free throws to give the Devils a 58-55 advantage with 0:31 left. That's when things started to pick up as King's came down and hit a three-pointer plus the foul to turn a 58-55 deficit into a 59-58 lead with 0:23 to go. Katz then got fouled on a drive to the hoop and hit two foul shots to put FDU back on top, 60-59, with 0:17 left. The Monarchs turned it over on their next possession and Green hit one-of-two from the line to give the Devils a 61-59 lead with 0:08 remaining. King's came back down and got a three-pointer up that would have won the game but it was long and FDU escaped with the victory.
Williamson tallied eight points off the bench while Katz posted seven points and three assists. Stress finished with six points, seven boards and three assists.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at home against Wilkes beginning at 8 pm.
