Will Green finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, including the game-winning free throws with 0:23 left, to give the College at Florham Devils a 61-60 victory over Delaware Valley in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The win puts the Devils in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament as the fourth seed where they will travel to face top-seeded Misericordia.
With the win, the Devils improved to 13-12 (8-6 Freedom) while the Aggies dropped to 7-18 (4-10 Freedom).
Delaware Valley got off the great start, racing out to a 22-10 lead with 8:24 left in the first half, before the Devils went on 12-4 run over the next four minutes to pull to within 26-22 with 4:49 remaining. Sophomore guard
Trevor Sykes had six points for FDU in the run. The Aggies got their lead back up to nine, 31-22, with 3:56 to go but junior forward
Derek Hall scored the final two baskets of the half to make the score 31-26 in favor of DVC heading into the break.
The Devils came storming out of the locker room and started the second half with a 16-5 run to grab a 42-36 advantage with 15:01 left in the game thanks to seven points from senior guard
Adam Katz and six points from Green. With the game tied at 50-50 and 8:14 remaining on the clock, Delaware Valley went on a quick 8-3 run to take a 58-53 lead with 4:41 to go. After two minutes of scoreless ball, Hall converted a layup and Katz drained two free throws to pull FDU within one, 58-57, with 2:26 to go. Both teams went cold again before Hall knocked down two free throws to give the Devils a 59-58 edge with 0:57 to play. The Aggies came back with two free throws of their own with 0:32 remaining to make it 60-59 but Green was fouled in the paint with 0:23 left and calmly sank both freebies to give the Devils a 61-60 lead. The Aggies brought the ball back down the court and waited until there was 0:04 left before driving the lane for the potential game-winner. Sophomore forward
Andrew Stress came up huge though, knocking the ball away to preserve the win for the Devils.
Hall tallied 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in the win while Katz added 11 points. Sykes tallied nine points while Stress ripped down seven boards.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, in the Semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament at Misericordia beginning at 8 pm.
