Adam Katz finished with 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists while also hitting a game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime where the College at Florham Devils hung on to beat Eastern by a score of 77-73 in Freedom Conference action on Tuesday evening.
With the win, the Devils improved to 12-12 (7-6 Freedom) while the Eagles dropped to 14-10 (7-6 Freedom). The win also kept the Devils in the hunt for a spot in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament. If the Devils had lost to Eastern they would have been eliminated from contention because DeSales beat Wilkes on the road at Wilkes.
After sophomore forward
Andrew Stress hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 10-10 with 12:57 left in the half, Eastern went on a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to grab a 26-13 lead. FDU came right back though, ripping off a 13-0 run to tie the game at 26-26 with 1:23 remaining in the half thanks to six points apiece from Katz and sophomore guard
Trevor Sykes. It was the Eagles turn to respond however, as they scored the final four points of the half to take a 30-26 advantage into intermission.
Eastern built their lead back up to double digits, 53-42, with 8:27 to go in the contest and it was 57-49 in favor of the Eagles with 5:03 to go in the game. That's when the Devils dug in and started their comeback as Sykes hit a three to cut it to 57-52 before a Katz three ball made it 57-55 with 2:36 to play. It was still a two-point Eastern lead, 59-57, with 0:36 to go after a layup from junior forward
Derek Hall and after the Devils were forced to foul, Eastern only made one-of-two from the line to make the score 60-57 with 0:20 remaining. Katz calmly brought the ball up the court and buried a three from the top of the key to tie the game at 60-60 with 0:13 left but the Eagles had enough time for one last possession. FDU rose up on defense though and got a stop and the ball back with 0:01.2 remaining. FDU set up a great play from their own baseline where Stress threw the ball to sophomore forward
Will Green at the other free throw line where Green then tapped the ball to Sykes who got off a shot at the buzzer, but it was long and the game went to overtime.
FDU came out hot start the extra session, scoring the first five points to take a 65-60 lead before the Eagles went on an 8-2 run to grab a 68-67 advantage with 2:37 to go. Sykes nailed a three with 1:32 left to put FDU up 70-68 and Hall made it 72-68 with 0:58 to play after a jumper in the paint. Eastern drained a three on their next possession to make it 72-71 but Katz hit a jumper at the free throw line to put the Devils back on top by three, 74-71, with 0:21 remaining. The Eagles came right back down and got a layup to close to 74-73 and then fouled by Katz sank both freebies to give FDU a 76-73 edge with 0:13 to play. Eastern came back down and missed a long three that would have tied it and Stress made one-of-two at the line to seal the 77-73 win for the Devils.
Hall tallied 19 points and eight rebounds while Sykes chipped in 13 points off the bench. Green was a monster on the glass all night, collecting 13 rebounds to go along with nine points.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Delaware Valley beginning at 3 pm. If the Devils win the game, they will qualify for the conference tournament.
