Box Score MADISON, NJ - Trailing by eight, 75-67, with 0:11 to go, the College at Florham Devils somehow found a way to cut their deficit to three, 76-73, with 0:04 remaining in regulation. That's when sophomore guard
Kevin Furlong dribbled the length of the court and drilled a three-pointer to send the game to overtime where FDU went on to beat their cross-town rival Drew by a score of 86-80 on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Devils improved to 2-4 while the Rangers dropped to 3-5.
The first ten minutes of the game was a see-saw affair as both teams held leads. The game was tied at 23-23 with 7:19 left when the Devils went on a 10-4 run to grab a 33-27 lead with 1:06 to go. The Rangers scored the last bucket of the half though, and pulled to within 33-29 heading into intermission.
FDU started the second half strong, grabbing a 40-33 lead after a three-pointer from freshman guard
Nick Acito but Drew came right back and ripped off a 27-9 run over the next eight minutes to take a 60-49 lead with 9:36 to go. FDU cut it to five, 63-58, after a layup by junior forward
Matt Argudo with 6:11 remaining but the Devils could get no closer than that and trailed by eight, 75-67, with 0:21 left in regulation. Senior guard
Mike Williamson drilled a three-pointer with 0:11 left to make it 75-70 and Drew only made 1-of-2 free throws at the other end to take a 76-70 lead. Junior guard
Trevor Sykes then came down and buried a three-ball of his own to cut it to 76-73 with 0:05 to play but the Devils were obviously forced to foul. With the crowd noise at an all-time high, Drew missed both free throws to keep the score at 76-73 so Furlong could provide one of the best moments in Ferguson Recreation Center history as he nailed the game-tying three as the clock expired.
The Devils scored the first six points of overtime to grab an 82-76 lead with 1:58 left and then their defense took over, holding Drew to only two more points the rest of the way while hitting 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the amazing come-from-behind victory.
Sykes finished with a team-high 21 points while senior forward
Derek Hall was a monster down low all night, recording 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Williamson finished with 18 points, Furlong with 12 points and six rebounds, and Argudo with a tough nine points and 14 boards.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Staten Island beginning at 1 pm.
