Devils Battle Tough But Fall To William Paterson, 69-61

Box Score MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils held a 43-38 advantage with 11:43 left in the game but William Paterson responded with a 17-5 run over the next seven minutes to grab a 55-48 lead on their way to a 69-61 victory on Monday evening in non-conference action.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-2 while the Pioneers improved to 3-1.

William Paterson jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before the Devils cut it to 12-11 after a layup from sophomore guard Kevin Furlong with 11:45 remaining in the first half.  The Pioneers built their advantage back up to eight, 21-13, with 9:15 to go but FDU closed the half on a 17-6 run to take a 30-27 lead into halftime.  Junior guard Trevor Sykes was the catalyst in the run, scoring six points for the Devils.

FDU opened up a seven-point lead, 36-29, early in the second half after a three-pointer by freshman guard Nick Acito but the Pioneers came right back and tied the game at 36-36 with 16:16 remaining.  Senior guard Mike Williamson then scored four straight points before senior forward Derek Hall tallied three points as the Devils had a five-point edge, 43-38, with 11:43 to go.  That's when William Paterson made their move though, going on the 17-5 run to take a 55-48 lead with 4:46 to play.  FDU cut it to five, 55-50, after two free throws from Acito but the Pioneers got it right back up to nine, 61-52, with 3:07 to go.  The Devils made one last push and closed the gap to 65-61 after Sykes made 2-of-3 free throws but the Pioneers went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the win.

Williamson scored a game-high 17 points off the bench while junior forward Will Green added 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Acito finished with nine points, Sykes with eight, and Hall with seven points and eight rebounds.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, with their Freedom Conference opener at DeSales beginning at 8 pm.
