Will Green tallied 20 points and 17 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the College at Florham Devils were defeated by Stevens in their 2012 season opener by a score of 74-65 on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-1 while the Ducks improved to 3-0.
The game was tied at 8-8 after 6:48 of action in the first half when Stevens went on a 16-7 run over the next eight minutes to grab a 24-15 lead with 6:04 to go in the first half. FDU came right back though, ripping off a 16-8 spurt to pull to within 32-31 with 1:29 remaining thanks to seven points from Green. Stevens drained a three-pointer with 0:15 to play to go up four, 35-31, but the Devils got a free throw with 0:03 left to head into the locker room trailing by a count of 35-32.
Stevens started the second half strong, opening up a 45-38 lead with 14:05 to go and the lead was still seven, 53-46, with 9:57 remaining. The Devils cut it to three, 53-50, after a layup from Green with 7:56 to play but Stevens responded with a 9-2 run to grab a 62-52 advantage with 5:21 left. FDU made on final push, closing the gap to 65-59 after a layup from senior guard
Mike Williamson but the Ducks went 9-of-10 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the 74-65 victory.
Williamson finished the game with 15 points off the bench while junior guard
Trevor Sykes added 14 points. Senior forward
Derek Hall recorded five points, six rebounds and four assists. The big story for the Devils though, was at the free throw line where they converted just 16-of-32 attempts.
The Devils return to action on Monday, November 26, 2012, at home against William Paterson beginning at 7 pm.
