Dramatic Comeback Secures Spot For FDU In Conference Tourney

Box Score CENTER VALLEY, PA - With the winner getting the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament, the loser would be eliminated, and trailing 2-0 with only 3:20 to go in regulation, the College at Florham Devils embarked on a comeback for the ages to beat DeSales by a score of 3-2 in overtime to earn that spot in the conference tournament.

With the win, the Devils improved to 7-12 (4-3 Freedom) while the Bulldogs dropped to 7-9-1 (2-5 Freedom).  FDU will now go on to play top-seeded Misericordia in the Semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

DeSales started the scoring at the 21:25 mark and kept that lead through the rest of the first half and halfway through the second half before making it 2-0 in the 61st minute.  Even though the Devils held a statistical advantage, 15-11 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks, things were looking bleak for FDU.  With 3:20 to go though, FDU finally got on the board when junior midfielder Michelle Hickey found the back of the net off a pass from freshman defender Kelly Roche.  The Devils kept the pressure on but it would seem like they would just run out of time, that is until junior forward Samantha Messina came up huge with only 0:11 to go when she sent the game to overtime and gave the Devils new life when she knocked home a feed from senior defender Emily Kilgore.  With time winding down once again in the extra session, it looked like the game would go to a second overtime but junior forward Claire Donohue set off a huge celebration on the FDU sideline when she tallied the game-winner off a pass from Messina to give the Devils the most dramatic of wins.

Freshman goalkeeper Anna Bandly was stellar in goal all afternoon, picking up the win by making five saves.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, in the Semifinals of the Freedom Conference Tournament at top-seeded Misericordia beginning at 7 pm.
