Box Score MADISON, NJ - In what was virtually a play-in game for the Freedom Conference Tournament, junior forward
Lanie Andrews tallied four goals and an assist to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 5-4 victory over Manhattanville on Tuesday evening. The winner of the game made the conference tournament while the loser was out. As a result, the Devils will be the third seed in the upcoming tournament.
With the win, the Devils improved to 9-9 (5-2 Freedom) while the Valiants dropped to 11-7 (3-4 Freedom). FDU will travel to play second-seeded Eastern next Wednesday afternoon.
Andrews got the scoring started at the 9:52 mark when she converted passes from sophomore midfielder
Rebecca Bruns and senior forward
Leanna Grotyohann off of a penalty corner. The Valiants came right back though and tied it at 1-1 just two minutes later. FDU went back on top, 2-1, when Andrews knocked in another penalty corner off feeds from sophomore forward
Katelin Leibner and senior midfielder
Marybeth Weimer at the 18:55 mark.
FDU took their 2-1 lead into halftime and made it 3-1 just 1:26 into the second stanza when Andrews notched her third goal of the game. Manhattanville came storming back however, as
Amy DeChent scored two goals in 0:21 to tie the game at 3-3 only two minutes after Andrews gave FDU a 3-1 advantage. FDU banged home their third penalty corner of the evening at the 45:58 mark when senior midfielder
Kelsey Kistle scored off passes from senior defender
Corey VanOrden and Andrews. The Devils took a 5-3 edge with 16:35 left in the contest when Andrews tipped home a long pass from sophomore midfielder
Niki Ikeda. The biggest sequence of the game then took place with five minutes to go in the game as Manhattanville was awarded a penalty shot that DeChent took. FDU decided to bring in freshman goalkeeper
Amy Defnet to face DeChent and Defnet came up huge in stoning DeChent's shot. The reason it was so big was because two minutes later, the Valiants cut the lead to 5-4 and put pressure on the Devils to control the ball down the stretch. FDU did just that and ran out the clock to secure the win and the bid to the Freedom Conference Tournament.
Senior goalkeeper
Tess Loughran picked up the win, making four saves.
The Devils return to action on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at home for Senior Day against Ramapo beginning at 7 pm.
