Devils Rally Late For 67-63 Win Over Manhattanville

Box Score MADISON, NJ - Trailing 57-53 with 4:20 left in the game, the College at Florham Devils closed the contest out with a 14-6 run to earn to a 67-63 victory over Manhattanville in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening.  The Devils had four players score in double digits in the win, led by 17 points from senior guard Adam Katz.

With the win, FDU improved to 7-7 (2-1 Freedom) while the Valiants dropped to 7-7 (1-2 Freedom).

Manhattanville opened up a quick seven point lead, 17-10, with 6:03 gone by in the first half but the Devils responded with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 22-19 lead with 9:54 to go.  The Valiants came right back though, closing the half with a 21-8 run to take a 40-30 lead into intermission.

The Valiants increased their lead to 12, 42-30, on their first possession of the second half but FDU then dug in and reeled off a 23-9 run to grab a 53-51 advantage with 6:51 left in the game thanks to eight points from junior forward Derek Hall.  Manhattanville came right back to take a 57-53 lead with 4:20 to play but junior guard Ardell Roberts came down and nailed a three-pointer on FDU's next possession to cut it to 57-56.  The Valiants held a 61-58 edge with 2:44 to go but the Devils got a layup from sophomore forward Will Green to make it 61-60 with 1:46 remaining and FDU then held Manhattanville scoreless on the Valiants' next two possessions to get the ball back trailing by one with under a minute to play.  After a timeout, Katz came off two screens to drill a jumper from the elbow that gave the Devils a 62-61 lead with 0:44 to go.  FDU then forced a turnover, forcing Manhattanville to fould and sophomore guard Trevor Sykes hit his first free throw to give the Devils a 63-61 lead.  Sykes missed his second freebie but Roberts ran down the rebound, was fould and made both of his foul shots to put the Devils up by four, 65-61, with 0:20 to play.  The Devils forced another turnover on defense but turned it right back over and then fouled with 0:04 to go, allowing Manhattanville to pull to within 65-63 after two free throws.  The Valiants were forced to foul but Katz put the game out of reach by calmly sinking both free throws to give the Devils a 67-63 victory.

Roberts was phenominal off the bench, dropping in 16 points while Hall added 15 points and seven rebounds.  Green was just as good down low, finishing with 14 points and eight boards.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, January 14, 2011, at home against Misericordia beginning at 3 pm.
