Devils Fall To Delaware Valley, 50-7

MADISON, NJ - Sophomore running back Kyle Schuberth carried 12 times for 110 yards and three touchdowns to lead Delaware Valley to a 50-7 win over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  It was the home and conference opener for the Devils.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-3 (0-1 MAC) while the Aggies improved to 4-0 (2-0 MAC).

After two fruitless drives by each team, the Aggies made it 7-0 when senior linebacker Chris James returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown with 6:25 left in the first quarter.  A fumble by FDU on their next possession gave DVC the ball in plus territory, which they capitalized on by going 45 yards in seven plays to take a 13-0 lead on a seven-yard touchdown run by Schuberth.

The Aggies got the ball on the FDU side of the field again with 7:21 left in the first half and after going 45 yards in three plays, Schuberth punched it in from three yards out to make it 20-0 with 6:03 remaining.  The Devils started with the ball in DVC territory with 2:35 to go in the half but went three-and-out and the Aggies took their 20-0 lead into intermission.

Delaware Valley was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty before the third quarter began so the Devils were set to kickoff from the 45-yard line.  FDU tried to swing momentum in their favor with an on-side kick but the Aggies recovered and on their second play, senior running back Tyler Neal exploded for a 50-yard touchdown run to give DVC a 27-0 lead.  FDU fumbled on their next possession, with the Aggies returning it to the FDU eight yard line, and after a two-yard run from Neal, Schuberth took it in from six yards out to put the Aggies on top by a count of 34-0 with 11:41 left in the third.  The Devils couldn't get anything going on their next series and went three-and-out, punting to the DVC 37-yard line.  On the first play, senior wide receiver Isaiah Hall took a jet sweep for 54 yards down to the FDU nine-yard line.  The Devils forced a field goal though, and junior kicker Jake Sobchak came on to nail a 22-yarder to give DVC a 37-0 lead with 8:57 to go in the third.

DVC again took over in FDU territory with 2:28 left in the third and went 36 yards in seven plays, capped by a three-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Cory Almasy to make it 44-0 with 14:08 left in the game.  The Devils had their best drive of the day after senior cornerback Sean McPherson intercepted Almasy at the DVC 44-yard line with 9:41 to go.  FDU pushed it down to the Aggie four-yard line in eight plays and the Devils got on the board when freshman running back Nick Miranda plowed in for a four-yard touchdown run to make it 44-7 with 3:49 remaining.  Delware Valley closed out the scoring on their next possession when sophomore running back Johnny Mayi broke off a 40-yard scoring scamper.

Senior quarterback Ryan Cushman finished the day 14-of-30 for 96 yards and an interception while sophomore wide receiver Joe Tauriello had four catches for 31 yards.  Junior wide receiver Doug Van Orden made four grabs for 20 yards.  On defense, sophomore linebacker Mike Mancino had a game-high 10 tackles while junior linebacker Charlie Thomas added nine stops.  Senior linebacker Steve Hoverson notched five tackles, four for loss, to go along with two sacks and a forced fumble.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 1, 2011, at home for Homecoming against Wilkes beginning at 1 pm.
