Devils Drop Season Opener To Saint Vincent, 55-3

LATROBE, PA - Senior quarterback Aaron Smetanka went 23-of-26 for 247 yards and four touchdowns to lead Saint Vincent to a 55-3 win over the College at Florham Devils on Saturday afternoon in the MAC/PAC Challenge.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-1 while the Bearcats improved to 1-1

Saint Vincent started the game with the ball and went 59 yards in 12 plays to grab a 7-0 lead when Smetanka found junior running back Scott Weaver for a three-yard touchdown pass with 8:23 left in the first quarter.  On FDU's first possession, the Devils marched back down the field and faced a fourth-and-goal from the Saint Vincent four yard line but junior kicker Mike Georgetti had his 21-yard field goal blocked and returned for a touchdown by freshman defensive back Darius Brown to give the Bearcats a 14-0 lead with 4:51 left in the first quarter.  Saint Vincent then tried to take advantage of the momentum but FDU recovered an onsides kick to begin their next drive with great field position.  A 17-yard pass from senior quarterback Ryan Cushman to sophomore wide receiver Joe Tauriello and a 14-yard completion from Cushman to sophomore wide receiver Anthony Fruncillo put the Devils at the Saint Vincent 20 but the drive stalled and Georgetti came on to boot a 37-yard field goal to put FDU on the board.  After three-and-outs by each team, the Bearcats started their next drive on their own 35 yard line.  On the first play, sophomore running back Huey Ehredt raced around the right side for a 65-yard touchdown to give Saint Vincent a 21-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

On the first possession of the second quarter, the Devils moved down to the Saint Vincent 22 yard line but the drive stalled and FDU turned the ball over on downs.  With 7:24 left in the first half, the Bearcats gained possession after a punt on their own 44 yard line and after a 46-yard gain on first down, Smetanka hit sophomore tight end Cody Strelick for a 10-yard touchdown pass to give Saint Vincent a 27-3 lead.  The Devils again moved into Bearcat territory on their next drive but again turned it over on downs and Saint Vincent then went 64 yards in 11 plays to take a 34-3 lead with 0:37 left in the half on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Smetanka to senior running back Joe Yezovich.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as Smetanka added another touchdown pass and the Bearcats then collected two rushing touchdowns to make the score 55-3 after three periods of play.

Cushman paced the Devils by going 18-of-41 for 245 yards with one interception while rushing nine times for 18 yards.  Senior wide receiver Tim Grey had four catches for 51 yards while junior wide receiver Doug Van Orden had three grabs for 56 yards.  Senior defensive back Steve Margolin and junior safety Shane Roland led the FDU defense with six tackles apiece while senior linebacker Steve Hoverson finished with four tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.

The Devils return to action on Friday, September 16, 2011, at The College of New Jersey beginning at 7 pm.
