Late Free Throws Give Misericordia 73-71 Win Over FDU

DALLAS, PA - The Misericordia Cougars sank two free throws with 0:02 remaining to break a 71-71 tie and they withstood a desperation play to beat the College at Florham Devils, 73-71, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 5-18 (3-8 Freedom) while the Cougars improved to 14-9 (7-5 Freedom).

FDU opened up a 16-8 lead with 14:20 left in the first half thanks to four three-pointers from junior guard Adam Katz.  The Devils held a seven-point advantage, 22-15, with 7:32 left in the half when the Cougars went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 28-24 lead.  FDU was not deterred though, as they closed the half with a 9-2 run to take a 33-30 lead heading into the locker room.

Misericordia came out hot to start the second half, reeling off a 16-7 run to grab a 46-40 lead with seven minutes gone by.  Over the next three minutes, FDU went on a 9-2 run to take a 49-48 lead but the Cougars then erupted for a 17-5 run to grab a 65-54 advantage with 5:55 left in the game.  Things looked bleek for FDU but the Devils fought back and went on a 17-6 run to tie the game at 71-71 with 0:18 remaining.  Katz tied the game at 71-71 with an old fashioned three-point play.  The Cougars got the ball back and played for the last shot, eventually getting fouled with 0:02 to go and nailing both free throws to stave off the late rally from FDU.

Katz finished with a game-high 27 points, 6-of-9 from three, while sophomore forward Derek Hall added 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Freshman forward Will Green chipped in 10 points.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Eastern beginning at 8 pm.
