MADISON, NJ - The top-seeded College at Florham Devils were knocked off by second-seeded Eastern in overtime, 3-2, in the Championship Game of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 12-9 while the Eagles improved to 12-8. FDU will now await a bid into the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament.
The Devils jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 7:44 into the game when junior midfielder
Corey VanOrden converted a pass from senior midfielder
Megan Springmeyer off of a penalty corner. Eastern came right back though, tying the game at 1-1 only 1:30 later but the Devils got their lead back at the 23:30 mark when sophomore forward
Lanie Andrews found the back of the cage. The Eagles concluded the first half scoring with 5:18 to go when Tournament MVP
Yvonne Herbster tied the game at 2-2.
Each team had opportunities to score in the second half but neither could convert. With time winding down in regulation, Andrews almost gave the Devils the lead but her shot went just wide. With only 0:35 gone by in the overtime period, Herbster got the ball off of a foul and raced down field coming to a stop at the eight yard line where she lofted the ball over the goalie and into the cage for the game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Tess Loughran was fantastic in goal, making 15 saves in the loss.
