Norton Rushes Devils To First Win, 17-3, Over King's

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Senior running back Sean Norton carried 26 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 17-3 victory over King's in MAC action on Saturday afternoon.  The win was the first at FDU for first year Head Coach Brian Surace.

With the win, the Devils improved to 1-8 (1-6 MAC) while the Monarchs dropped to 1-7 (1-6 MAC).

King's took the opening kickoff and moved the ball down to the FDU 24 yard line but senior linebacker Steve Hoverson sacked and forced a fumble from freshman quarterback Bryant Klein that junior defensive tackle Phil Kresefski recovered for the Devils.  FDU went three-and-out and punted on the ensuing possession but junior linebacker Charlie Thomas forced a fumble on the punt return that sophomore defensive tackle Rich DeAngelo pounced on to set the Devils up at the King's 37 yard line.  After a personal foul on King's moved the ball to the 22, senior quarterback Ryan Cushman scampered for 16 yards to set up first-and-goal at the six.  Norton carried twice down to the one where FDU faced fourth down.  After a timeout, the Devils elected to go for it and Norton took it in from a yard out to give the Devils a 7-0 lead with 9:02 left in the first quarter.  The FDU defense forced a three-and-out on the next Monarchs drive and the offense took over on their own 35 yard line.  The Devils then went 65 yards in eight plays to grab a 14-0 advantage, capped by a five-yard touchdown run from Norton with 3:39 to go in the quarter.  Norton carried four times for 22 yards on the drive while Cushman found junior wide receiver Jon Bennett for 11 yards and a first down on a big third-and-five.

The Monarchs began the second quarter with the ball and registered their only points of the day when sophomore kicker Mike Lloyd booted a 19-yard field goal to make it 14-3 with 12:45 left in the first half.  The Devils got the ball back at their own 28 with 5:56 to go before intermission.  It was all Norton on the drive as he carried six times for 46 yards to help the Devils move the ball to the King's eight yard line before junior kicker Travis Mullen knocked home a 25-yard field goal with 0:09 remaining to give FDU a 17-3 halftime edge.

Neither team got anything going in the third quarter as both squad's never crossed midfield.  FDU began the fourth quarter with a solid drive, marching down to the King's 16 yard line but Mullen missed a 33-yard field goal that would have but the Devils up by three touchdowns.  King's finally started moving the ball with 6:41 left in the game as they took it to the FDU 14 yard line but the Devil defense rose up and forced a turnover on downs when King's went for it on fourth-and-13.  The Monarchs had one last gasp with 2:53 to go, as they drove to the FDU 17 yard line but junior defensive back Peter Amerosi came up with an interception that sealed the victory for the Devils.

Cushman finished the game 9-of-21 for 93 yards through the air while rushing nine times for 44 yards on the ground.  Bennett made four catches for 41 yards while sophomore wide receiver Anthony Fruncillo caught two passes for 30 yards.  Defensively,  sophomore linebacker Mike Mancino had a team-high eight tackles while Hoverson finished with six tackles and two sacks.  Senior defensive lineman Mike Winters had 1.5 sacks, Thomas had a sack and a forced fumble, and senior defensive back Steve Margolin picked off a pass to help the Devils in the win.

FDU returns to action on Saturday, November 12, 2011, with their season finale at Lycoming beginning at 1 pm.
