Devils Knocked Off By Widener, 55-3

CHESTER, PA – Junior quarterback Chris Haupt went 20-of-28 for 274 yards and four touchdowns while senior wide receiver Cedrick Clayton caught seven passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns to lead Widener to a 55-3 win over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-5 (0-3 MAC) while the Pride improved to 5-1 (3-1 MAC).

The Devils tried an on-side kick to open the game but Widener recovered and drove down to the FDU four yard line where they faced a fourth down.  Haupt found sophomore wide receiver Dennis Wolley on the fourth down play for a four-yard touchdown to give the Pride a 7-0 lead with 12:56 left in the first quarter.  After a partially blocked punt, Widener got the ball back on the FDU 35 yard line with 7:56 to go in the first.  On the first play, Haupt found Clayton for a 35-yard scoring strike to give the Pride a 14-0 lead.  Widener went up 21-0 with 2:52 remaining the first quarter when Haupt found freshman running back Couve LaFate for a five-yard touchdown pass that capped a five play, 75-yard drive.  The Devils went three-and-out on their next possession but Widener fumbled the punt that senior defensive back Steve Margolin recovered on the Widener 41 yard line, giving FDU their best field position of the day thus far.  After a trick play on first down that resulted in a loss of 13 yards, the Devils couldn't get back to midfield and had to punt.

FDU began the second quarter on the Widener 41 yard line but on second down, Widener came away with an interception to set themselves up on their own 48.  Three plays later, LaFate ran it in from 14 yards out to give the Pride a 28-0 advantage with 11:32 to go in the first half.  FDU lined up to go for it on fourth down from their own 40 yard line on their next series but the shotgun snap went over the quarterback's head and Widener recovered on the FDU 11 yard line.  Two plays later, senior running back Brendan Curran made it 34-0 with a three-yard touchdown run.  The Devils were forced to punt out of their own end zone on their next possession but the punt was shanked and Widener took over at the FDU 14 yard line.  Junior running back Dante Pergolese put Widener up 41-0 on a four-yard touchdown run with 5:26 remaining in the second quarter.

The Devils got on the board with 8:15 left in the third quarter when junior kicker Travis Mullen booted a 38-yard field goal to make it 41-3.  Widener then took a 48-3 lead with 1:44 to go in the third on a 58-yard scoring strike from Haupt to Clayton.  The Pride capped the scoring for the afternoon with a seven-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Terrant Morrison with 3:10 left in the game to make it 55-3.

Sophomore running back Mike Larson rushed 15 times for 42 yards while senior quarterback Ryan Cushman went 6-of-13 for 13 yards and an interception.  Junior safety Shane Roland made a game-high seven tackles while senior outside linebacker Steve Hoverson had five tackles and two sacks.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at Lebanon Valley beginning at 1 pm.
