Big Third Quarter Leads Albright To 35-10 Win Over FDU

MADISON, NJ - Leading 14-10 with 10:30 left in the third quarter, Albright ripped off 21 straight points to pull away from the College at Florham Devils to earn a 35-10 win in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-7 (0-5 MAC) while the Lions improved to 5-3 (3-3 MAC).

After two failed drives apiece by both squads to open the game, Albright took over on their own 40 yard line with 4:50 left in the first quarter.  The Lions then went 60 yards in five plays to grab a 7-0 lead on a 20 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback TJ Luddy to senior wide receiver Josh Bakala.  FDU came right back though, as junior running back Frank Trivigno brought the ensuing kickoff out to the 31 yard line.  The Devils faced a third-and-10 but senior quarterback Ryan Cushman found junior wide receiver Jon Bennett for a 39 yard gain to the Albright 30 yard line.  FDU faced another third down, this time a third-and-two from the Lions 22, but senior running back Sean Norton took a handoff and raced 22 yards for the score to tie the game at 7-7 with 1:11 left in the first quarter.

On the second series of the second quarter, Albright went 65 yards in three plays capped by a 54-yard touchdown pass from Luddy to senior wide receiver Scott Pillar to take a 14-7 lead with 10:07 to go in the half.  Neither team got much going after that as the score remained 14-7 in favor of Albright heading into halftime.

The Devils got the ball to start the second half and marched 57 yards in 10 plays to cut their deficit to 14-10 on a 28-yard field goal from junior kicker Travis Mullen.  After a personal foul on the Lions on the kickoff, FDU took over on their own 46 yard line.  On first down, Cushman found Bennett for 11 yards and on third-and-eight from the Albright 41, Cushman found Bennett again for eight yards and the first down.  FDU faced second-and-15 at the Lion 38 when Cushman scampered out of the pocket for a 26-yard gain down to the 12 yard line.  The drive stalled from there though and Mullen had to come on to boot the field goal.  FDU tried a pooch kick on the kickoff but Albright returned it to the FDU 41 yard line, setting up great field position.  Senior running back Josan Holmes carried twice for 35 yards down to the FDU six and then senior fullback Marty Reinhardt carried for three yards to the three yard line.  On the next play, Reinhardt plunged up the middle for a score to give the Lions a 21-10 advantage with 8:45 remaining in the third quarter.  The Devils went three-and-out on their next drive and Albright took over on their own 37.  The Lions moved the ball to the FDU 36 when Luddy hooked up with Pillar for a 36-yard scoring strike to put Albright up by a score of 28-10 with 4:40 to go in the third.  FDU went three-and-out again on their next series and an intentional grounding penalty gave the Lions the ball on the FDU 47 yard line.  Albright faced a fourth-and-three from the 40 where they lined up to punt but the Devils jumped offside to keep the Lion drive alive.  Two plays later, Reinhardt took it in from 15 yards out as Albright took a 35-10 lead with 0:17 to play in the third quarter.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Devils moved into Albright territory on a 45-yard completion from Cushman to Benett.  FDU marched all the way down to the Albright 16 yard line but the drive stalled and the Devils turned it over on downs.  That was as close as the Devils were able to come to scoring again as the Lions successfully ran out the clock to earn the victory.

It was a career day for Bennett as he finished the game with seven receptions for 127 yards while Cushman went 16-of-36 for 168 yards.  Norton carried 14 times for 41 yards and a score while sophomore wide receiver Anthony Fruncillo had four catches for 17 yards.  Defensively, senior linebacker Steve Hoveson had a team-high nine tackles to go along with a sack and a fumble recovery.  Junior safety Shane Roland notched eight tackles while junior safety Joe Mancini tallied seven tackles and forced fumble.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at home for Senior Day against Stevenson beginning at 1 pm.
