MADISON, NJ - Down 44-28 with 10:01 left in the game, Eastern rallied to beat the College at Florham Devils by a score of 61-58 in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 3-12 (1-5 Freedom) while the Eagles improved to 10-5 (3-3 Freedom).
FDU got off to a fantastic start, opening up a 14-4 lead with 8:31 left in the first half thanks to five points apiece from junior guard
Adam Katz and sophomore guard
Mike Williamson. Eastern cut it to 18-13 with 4:07 to go but the Devils went on a quick 7-2 run to get their lead back to 10, 25-15, with 0:43 to play. The Eagles hit a free throw late to make the halftime score 25-16 in favor of FDU.
After Eastern cut it to eight, 33-25, with 13:27 left in the game, FDU erupted for an 11-3 run to grab a 44-28 advantage with 10:01 remaining. That's when the game changed though as Eastern ripped off a 19-6 run to pull to within 50-47 with 4:17 to go. The Devils got it back up to seven, 54-47, but the Eagles then went on a 9-0 run to grab a 56-54 lead with 2:20 left. Freshman guard
Trevor Sykes made one-of-two at the line to make it 56-55 and after Katz missed two free throws, the Eagles sank a pair from the line to take a 58-55 lead with 0:31 to play. Katz then made one-of-two from the stripe to make it 58-56 but the Eagles hit two more free throws to increase their lead to four, 60-56, with 0:17 left. Sophomore forward
Derek Hall dropped in a layup with 0:05 to go but the Eagles got another free throw and the Devils turned it over on their last possession to allow Eastern to escape with the win.
Katz finished with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds while Sykes had nine points and nine boards. Hall tallied six points, eight rebounds and six assists.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at home for Alumni Day against Misericordia beginning at 3 pm. The Alumni Game starts at 10 am.
