Devils Make It 3-0 With 28-14 Win Over Apprentice

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Senior quarterback Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) went 17-of-34 for 201 yards to go along with two touchdowns and one interception while also rushing eight times for 50 yards to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 28-14 victory over Apprentice on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 3-0 while the Builders dropped to 1-3.  The 3-0 start is the first for FDU since the 1994 season.

The Devils took the opening kickoff of the game and marched 74 yards in 12 plays all the way down to the Apprentice four yard line but unfortunately the drive stalled and the Devils had to attempt a 21-yard field goal.  The Builders came right up the middle on the try though, and blocked it to prevent FDU from scoring.   The FDU defense held Apprentice inside their own five yard line and forced a punt, allowing the Devils to take over on the Builders 46.  Facing a fourth-and-one from the Apprentice 31, senior running back Brendon Griffin (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) was stuffed on a run up the middle and the Devils turned the ball over on downs.  On Apprentice's first play of the ensuing drive, sophomore safety Joe Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) picked off a pass at midfield and returned it to the Builders 39 yard line, setting up the Devils in plus territory.  On first down, Jeffers hit freshman wide receiver Anthony Fruncillo (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) on a wide receiver screen for 17 yards down to the 20 yard line.  FDU faced third-and-eight from the 18 and Jeffers connected with senior wide receiver Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) for 15 yards down to the three yard line.  The Devils punched it in on the next play as senior running back Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) ran it in from three yards out to give FDU a 7-0 lead with 1:35 left in the first quarter.

FDU drove the ball down into Apprentice territory early in the second quarter and faced fourth-and-three from the Builder 30 yard line when Jeffers was intercepted by sophomore defensive back Marlon Lane (Severn, MD/Arundel), who returned it 75 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:01 left in the first half.  The Devils got the ball back with 5:42 left in the half and pushed it into the Apprentice half of the field again but FDU fumbled at the 18 thwarting another scoring chance.  With one last chance for points in the first half, the Devils got the ball on their own 29 yard line with 1:11 remaining.  Jeffers hooked up with junior wide receiver Tim Grey (Ft. Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) for a 34-yard gain down to the Apprentice 20 with 0:32 to go.  On the next play, Jeffers hit sophomore wide receiver Joe Tauriello (Bloomfield, NJ/St. Mary's) for a 20-yard touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone to put FDU up 14-7.  The Builders though, returned the ensuing squib kickoff to the FDU 37 yard line and had 0:15 to try and get more points on the scoreboard.  Junior defensive end John DiIorio (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) came up with a sack on first down to ensure FDU would enter halftime with a 14-7 advantage.

After the FDU defense forced a three-and-out and a punt on the Builders first possession of the second half, sophomore wide receiver Jon Bennett (Howell, NJ/Freehold Township) came through and blocked the punt giving the Devils the ball on the Apprentice 30 yard line.  FDU moved the ball to the 15 but the drive stalled and sophomore kicker Travis Mullen (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) came on to attempt a 32-yard field goal.  The attempt was partially blocked and the kick came up just short, keeping the score at 14-7.  The Devil defense rose to the challenge once again, forcing another three-and-out, and a shanked punt allowed the FDU offense to take over on the Apprentice 38 yard line.  Jeffers hit senior tight end Beau Reed (Ocean, NJ/Rumson) for a 20-yard gain to the 18 on first down and on fourth-and-six from the 14, Jeffers found Scamporino for a 14-yard touchdown strike to put the Devils up by a score of 20-7 with 6:36 left in the third quarter.

Apprentice cut their deficit to 20-14 with 4:27 left in the game on a 55-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Trey Tillman (Chesepeake, VA/Hickory) to senior wide receiver Bryan Cain (Baker, LA/Baker). The Devils recovered an onsides kick attempt by Apprentice but went three-and-out and had to punt.  FDU got a great punt from senior punter John Hancock (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) and a holding penalty put the ball at the Apprentice four yard line, forcing the Builders to go 96 yards for the win with 3:01 to go in the contest.  The Devil defense pushed the Builders back to their own one yard line and on third down, sophomore defensive tackle Jeff Koubek (Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) tipped a pass that sophomore defensive end Joe Pivinski (Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) caught in the end zone for a touchdown.  The Devils went for the two-point conversion and got it to make the score 28-14 with 2:01 left in the game.

The FDU defense was phenomenal all day long as they held Apprentice to just 118 total yards in the game.  DiIorio finished the game with two sacks while junior linebacker Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) and sophomore linebacker Charles Thomas (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands Regional) each had five tackles.

Scamporino finished with five catches for 59 yards and a score while Griffin rushed 18 times for 61 yards.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, October 2, 2010, with their Middle Atlantic Conference opener at Widener beginning at 1 pm.
