SAN DIEGO, CA - Down 31-18 at halftime, the College at Florham Devils rallied to take a 63-60 lead with 0:19 left but Bethany Lutheran hit a three-pointer with 0:01 to send the game into overtime where they ended up winning a 74-69 decision in the fifth-place game of the San Diego Surf 'N Slam Tournament at Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 6-5 while the Vikings improved to 4-5.
The Vikings opened up an 18-6 advantage halfway through the first half but the Devils came back with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 18-18 with 4:49 left in the half thanks to five points from freshman guard
Jasmine Washington. Bethany Lutheran stormed back with a 13-0 run to close the half with a 31-18 lead.
The FDU deficit reached 15 points, 37-22, before the Devils exploded for an 18-3 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 9:17 left in regulation. Senior forward
Shealyn Taggart had six points in the run for the Devils. The Vikings regrouped again though, and ran their lead back up to eight, 56-48, with 4:06 left. That's when FDU dug in for one final push as they Devils reeled off an 11-4 run to close to within 60-59 after a layup from freshman guard
Brianna Nicholls with 0:49 remaining. After the Devils forced a turnover on defense, junior guard
Shaleah Alston sank two free throws to put the Devils up 61-60 with 0:38 left. The Vikings turned it over again and had to foul with 0:19 to play but Washington hit both to give FDU a 63-60 lead. The Devils couldn't quite close it out though as Bethany Lutheran hit a three-pointer with 0:01 left to send the game into an extra session.
FDU jumped out to a quick three-point lead, 66-63, but the Vikings scored the next six points to take a 69-66 advantage with 1:59 left. After two free throws from Nicholls made it 69-68, the Devils fouled and the Vikings got those two free throws right back to take a 71-68 lead. Freshman forward
Melissa DeHaas hit one-of-two from the line to make it a 71-69 game with 0:51 left and the Vikings tried to let the Devils steal the game by hitting only three-of-six free throws down the stretch, but FDU couldn't put the ball in the hoop allowing Bethany Lutheran to secure the victory.
Nicholls led the Devils with a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals while Washington came off the bench to notch 13 points and six steals. Taggart and Alston each finished with nine points as the Devils shot just 29.8% (25-for-84) for the game.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at home against King's beginning at 1 pm.
