Devils Beaten By King's, 45-14

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Senior quarterback Corey Lavin (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) went 22-of-37 for 305 yards and three touchdowns to lead King's to a 45-14 victory over the College at Florham Devils in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 3-6 (0-6 MAC) while the Monarchs improved to 1-8 (1-5 MAC).

King's started the game with the ball and went 70 yards in eight plays capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Lavin to freshman wid receiver Chris Greene (Bear, DE/Howard) to take a 7-0 lead with 10:55 left in the first quarter.  On FDU's first play from scrimmage, junior running back Sean Norton (Lincoln Park, NJ/Boonton) fumbled and King's recovered on the FDU 39 yard line.  Three plays later, Lavin made it 14-0 when he hit sophomore wide receiver David Abdalla (Dunmore, PA/Valley View) for a 25-yard score with 9:18 left in the quarter.  After a three-and-out by the Devils, the Monarchs took the ball 75 yards in 15 plays and settled for a 25-yard field goal by senior kicker Ryan Cain (Huntington Valley, PA/LaSalle) to grab a 17-0 edge with 1:06 to go in the first.

FDU started the second quarter with the ball but on the first play, senior wide receiver Andrew Scamporino (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) fumbled and the Monarchs took over on the FDU 43 yard line.  After their first two plays didn't go anywhere, junior running back Matt Spencer (Furlong, NJ/Central Bucks East) ripped off a 43-yard touchdown run to put King's up, 24-0, with 14:28 left in the half.  FDU picked up one first down on their next drive but had to punt and after a 10-yard punt by senior punter John Hancock (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.), King's started their next possession on the FDU 49.  Three plays later, Greene ran it in from 32 yards out to put the Monarchs ahead, 31-0, with 9:48 left in the half.  The Devils got on the board on their next series, going 59 yards in seven plays capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Matt Jeffers (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) to sophomore wide receiver Doug Van Orden (Madison, NJ/Madison) with 6:22 remaining.  King's got that score right back though, going 70 yards in 10 plays to take a 38-7 lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Lavin with 1:19 left in the half.

The Monarchs scored on their first possession of the second half to take a 45-7 lead on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Lavin to senior wide receiver Jay Torres (Lebanon, NJ/Lebanon).  The Devils finished the scoring for the afternoon with 4:26 left in the third quarter when Jeffers connected on a 95-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Bayshawn Wells (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) to reach the final score of 45-14.  The 95-yard catch-and-run by Wells is the longest touchdown pass in FDU football history.

Jeffers finished the day 10-of-23 for 182 yards to go along with two touchdowns and one interception.  Defensively, junior linebacker Steve Hoverson (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) had 12 tackles and a sack while senior safety Gino Abbate (Port Reading, NJ/Woodbridge) also had 12 tackles.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at home for Senior Day against Lycoming beginning at 1 pm.
