Three At Buzzer Comes Up Short As Devils Fall To Stevens, 65-62

MADISON, NJ - Junior guard Adam Katz poured in 19 points while freshman guard Trevor Sykes added 15 points but it wasn't enough as the College at Florham Devils were defeated by Stevens, 65-62, on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-3 while the Ducks improved to 3-1.

FDU got out to a strong start, taking a 14-8 lead with 9:37 left in the first half thanks to six points from Sykes and five points from Katz.  With the Devils holding a 17-11 advantage, Stevens went on an 18-8 run to grab a 29-25 lead with 0:58 remaining.  Sophomore guard Mike Williamson drilled a three-pointer to make it 29-28 and after the Devils got a stop on defense, Katz hit a runner in the lane as time expired to put FDU up 30-29 entering the locker rooms.

The Ducks started strong in the second half, beginning on a 10-2 run to grab a 39-32 advantage.  FDU came back to cut it to 39-37 but Stevens responded with an 8-0 run to take a 47-37 lead with 12:40 left in the game.  The Devils came right back though, going on a 10-2 run to close to within 49-47 with 8:37 to go thanks to five points from Sykes.  After Stevens got their lead back to eight, 59-51, with 5:20 left, FDU went on a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to make the score 59-58 with 1:11 to go after an old fashioned three-point play by senior center Ricky Fetske.  Stevens got two free throws on the other end to go back up three, 61-58, but Katz got those two right back with two free throws of his own with 0:25 remaining.  The Ducks got to the line again and made two to back up three, 63-60, and on FDU's next possession, Sykes got dropped in a layup and got fouled to give the Devils a chance to tie the game.  Unfortunately Sykes couldn't convert and after two more Stevens free throws to make it 65-62, the Devils had the final possession with 0:12 left.  Katz brought the ball up court and after drawing a double team, he dished off to junior guard Alex Rosario but his game-tying three at the buzzer went just to the right allowing Stevens to escape with the win.

Fetske finished with seven points and eight rebounds while sophomore forward Derek Hall had six points and six boards.  Freshman forward Will Green added six points and eight boards off the bench.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Staten Island beginning at 1 pm.
